System Buses & Bandwidth
System Buses & Bandwidth
Date Issued: 21st Oct 2008

In computing terms, system buses are used to connect various components to the motherboard’s core logic and, often, to each other. Modern PCs run with a multitude of high-speed buses ranging from the interconnects between, say, the chipset and the CPU, graphics card, memory, and peripherals.

When installing Windows XP, most of the time you’ll find that it has the basic drivers it needs to install itself. However, sometimes you might need to intervene. This tends to be the case if you have a special type of storage, such as Serial ATA or a RAID device.

It’s been a long time since MHz were the only part of a CPU’s specification that concerned people. Manufacturers take different approaches to CPU design, even when using the same architecture. That means for example, at the same clock speed, an Intel and AMD processor will deliver different performance.

Watercooling for the PC has been around for years in some form or another, for at least as long as Scan have been in business, with basic physics defining why you want to use it. That means for air cooling, to cope with increasing temperature in the heatsink you need to move the air across it faster. That is why thermostatically controlled fans in your PC will turn faster the hotter something gets.

Logic Case SC-43480B 4U Short Chassis 10x 3.5" HDD + 3 x 5.25"" Bays is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid reliable chassis at a good price This 4U chassis was required to build a small server in a 19" rack. It was well made and robust, accommodated ATX motherboard easily. Two pre-supplied and fitted 80mm fans (three pin) for rear exhaust and two 120mm input fans (2 pin) provided effective cooling for my requirements. Cage with plastic rails supplied for hard drives, 5.25 cage and two ssd mounting points included. Front panel had a pair of USB 3 ports together with cable and motherboard header. Drop down lockable front cover includes a fibre filter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A few niggles, but as described I bought this case to fit snuggly into a 4u sized rack mountable space in my computer bench. It fits, but i’m Slightly disappointed by the finish on the case. It’s not the prettiest thing... and the silver (or metal) case peeks around the edges of the front when mounted into the 4u space, which is a shame as I wanted it to look flush in its space. I will probably remedy this in due course with some Matt black spray paint. When I received the item, there was a screw missing from the front panel, meaning the panel fell off when I unlocked and opened it. Not a great first impression, however I used one of the many screws it came with (for fitting hard disks etc) to fix this, so no problem if you’re not a perfectionist (I usually am, but the thing is so heavy, I’m not sending it back when I can easily fix it myself). Inside the case (which is very spacious) there are two 80mm and two 120mm fans. All very noisy when tested, so I will be replacing them. There are two caddy’s for hard drives (x10 3.5” hdd total) as well as a caddy for x4 ssds. On top of that there is space for 3x CD-ROM drives. This new case was bought for a new music production pc, and I want it to be quiet as possible, so I took the whole case apart which is quite a job, but easy enough, to lay sound insulation foam. On doing this I can say that the case is pretty solid in construction. Pros. - spacious, plenty of room for, well everything... - good for rack mounting (doubt you’d buy it for looks) - easily customisable, take it apart and customise. - plenty of screws, and mounting bits and pieces included. Cons. - not the highest quality item - included fans are cheap and noisy, probably shouldn’t have bothered and just knocked off £10. - you can see the metal case when mounted - not the prettiest case (Will attach pictures in due course)
