Watercooling
Watercooling
Date Issued: 19th Jun 2008

Watercooling for the PC has been around for years in some form or another, for at least as long as Scan have been in business, with basic physics defining why you want to use it. That means for air cooling, to cope with increasing temperature in the heatsink you need to move the air across it faster. That is why thermostatically controlled fans in your PC will turn faster the hotter something gets.

Anybody who has been near their share of computer systems will appreciate that not all systems make the same amount of noise. There are a number of reasons for why this is so. Firstly, a computer makes noise for different reasons. Generally, anything mechanical is going to make noise.

LIQUID.cool Vortex One DIY Liquid Cooling Kit, Strike One CPU Block, 500lph Pump/Reservoir, 240mm Radiator, 2x 120mm Fan is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Take my advice So when I first set this up using the instructions provided I had the pipe going into inlet 1 and the cap on inlet 2, the Manual didn't say if I should fill the Res to the top, I tried full and slightly under the full but the loop was super loud and full of air bubbles. It sounded like a water fountain. Anyway it doesn't say in the manual that you need a pipe inside the Res from which ever inlet you use. I just cut a but of pipe and pushed it in. I then filled the Res to the top and no more loud bubbling water feature, just nice smooth flowing water loop with zero bubbles. So take my advice and install a pipe inside the Res. Other than that it's a brilliant cooler for the price and looks amazing lit up in blue with the blue die inside.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More then i expect is totally worth the money, the pump is a litle noisy , speacial because you can not change the speed, but i buy 2 kits and i use 1 pump for 2 radiators for cpu and gpu, and 3600x and 1060 6gb oc no problem for the sistem even on 30gr C room temperature. No leaking or anything like that, more then happy. Perfect kit for starters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Starting Point Bought this kit to replace my homemade water-cooling solution as I thought it wasn't doing a sufficient job, however, it turns out it must have been doing a decent enough job as this kit give almost exactly the same temperatures as my homemade solution. Anyway this kit it a lot neater and includes everything you could possibly need to start out and most of the kit seems decent quality. The fittings, tubing and radiator are decent quality, however, one thing I did notice that the radiator does not use industry-standard threading to hold the fans on which I found out to my expense. I had planned to put the radiator at the front of my case the fans pushing through, however, the screws were too small and fell through the hole in the case, when I tried to use some spare screws, I found that the thread was different, so I had to change the fans to pull through and use the included short screws which have a larger head which holds the radiator and fans to the case. The pump worked, however, it was ridiculously noisy, after an hour of running and countless power resets I could not get the air out of the system so I resorted to using my old pump which worked perfectly with this system, I’m not saying that the pump is bad, I’m sure if persevered with it, it may have worked fine, however, is wanted to get the pc up and running. As the CPU block is designed with both AMD and Intel in mind, I had to grind off the AMD mound as they were fowling on my VRM heatsinks, I kind of expected to do this though. I cannot comment on the fans as I have not used them. They use Molex connectors so no PWM TLDR: Good starting point, Fittings, Tubing and Radiator all seem good quality, could not get the pump to work quietly, had to grind AMD mount off of the CPU block Pros: • Ease of install • Good for beginners • Good quality radiator • Good quality fittings • Quality tubing • All hardware you need required to get started with water-cooling. Cons: • Radiator does not use industry-standard thread size • CPU block designed to be used with both Intel and AMD so may fowl on RAM or VRM heatsink • Pump does not seem the best quality, pretty loud • Fans are not PWM

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good idea. Poor delivery Bought this kit and fitted it as instructed. The instructions are clear and the fitting is simple. The pump reservoir leaked so I bought an external reservoir. Then the seal around the pump itself failed and the pump died. Now have to replace the pump. The only good points are the rest of the kit. The motor lets it down badly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic value for money Scan sold this on offer at £80, unbelievable when you consider what you get for the such a low price. Whats in it and what I thought about each component. Pump and reservoir - excellent build quality, the only thing that lets it down is that the 12v pump pumps too hard and makes an awful high pitched noise. I resolved this by hacking a molex wire to deliver 7V and it works fine, slower flow rate but very quiet operation. Radiator - Nice 240mm rad, seems well built, no real visual differnce to branded ones. CPU waterblock - Really nicely engineered metal and perspex affair. Fantastic component Fans - Decent, are bright, lights up your rig nice, but plugs into molex, no pwm so you'd need to find a way to adjust them if you dont like the Jet sound Tubing - Enough tubing to do once large build or two smaller builds Fittings - Nice black finish and seemingly well made Accessories - Loads of stuff like distilled water, dyes, brackets - everything you need/ All in all a great beginners kit that has everything you need to set up watercooling for your PC

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bit of kit Bought this klit to replace my aging corsair h unit and get a bit more life out of my FX8350. Easy enough to set up and get running. Initial pump noise due to me accidently letting air into the system when filling. Struggled to get it bled so left the plug out the resevoir for a couple of hours with the system running coming back every 15 mins to top it up as the air was purged. Eventually came back to a silent system. Running an fx8350 overclocked to 5ghz Room temp 19 and its reading in core temps as idling at 18 degrees and hasnt gone above 50 when running prime95 stress test program for an hour.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor This all you may need kit is very poor. The pump is noisy even in a loop with no air, it has this high pitch whine that can be heard even though gaming and head phones. The packaging indcates that nothing else is required, however no biocide is included. It was set up following all instructions and after 24 hours the dye had stained all the pipes and 3 weeks later the pump dies (possibly due to the lack of glycol according to Liquid.cool who advised after it should be used even though it was not the included in this everything you may need kit, and the coolant provided is not coolant but distilled water for cleaning the loop again according to Liquid.Cool) This product is mislabelled to the point of being misleading and the product does perform as stated for a reasonable amount of time. (Three weeks). The water block and radiator are average to good, shame about the pump.

Can this be used with a seperate GPU cooling block?

This kit is for cooling a CPU. I want to cool my GPU though. Can I use this kit with a seperate GPU cooling block? Will I encounter any compatibility issues by using a GPU water block?
Asked by: TheFireBlades
Yes. I use for my 1060 6gb oc and you get more then enough fittings.

is the block copper?

hi, i was wondering if the water block is made out of copper or aluminium
Asked by: Turtleking
I think it may be aluminium as the underside of the block is a silver colour so I'm sure it wouldn't be copper. Hope this helps.
