Intel's E5 1600 V3 series of Xeon processors are based on the Haswell EP architecture, and the updated socket 2011-3 for mounting. This brings technology improvements from the enthusiast Haswell-E series into the server and workstation areas, and combines them with the ability to run two CPUs on a single motherboard.
For the most part, this generation is geared toward more cores per CPU, but with slightly lower clock speeds. At the same time, though, performance per clock has been improved - and the addition of new instruction sets like AVX2 and FMA3 can mean massive increases to processing speed in select applications.
