Product Overview Intel's New 4th Generation Intel ® Core™ i7 4790 offers superior performance over the previous generation processors. This astounding performance boost results in performance improvements in multi-tasking, encoding, gaming and multithreaded applications. Intel's 4th generation processor has improved PCI-Lane 3.0 bandwidth which helps further boost performance of latest generation 3 graphics cards for the ultimate gaming experience.

For overclocking enthusiasts, Intel's 4th gen CPU has improved memory overclocking support, with up to and beyond 3000MHz possible with the very best memory kits. Memory bandwidth is critically important to Haswell compared to previous generations. High frequency memory performance significantly improves encoding, gaming and benchmarking tasks. The biggest leap in Intel's Haswell processor is the onboard graphics which is now up to 2.6x faster than previous HD4000 found in the Ivybridge CPU. Features Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0
Dynamically increases the processor's frequency as needed by taking advantage of thermal and power headroom when operating below specified limits.

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology
Intel Core i7 delivers two processing threads per physical core. Highly threaded applications can get more work done in parallel, completing tasks sooner.

Built-In Visuals - Intel® HD Graphics
Enhanced 3-D1 performance for immersive mainstream and casual gaming. Can support up to three UltraHD* (4K) displays and collage display.

Intel® Wireless Display
Wirelessly stream HD / 3-D video and games to your TV or projector for presentations and entertainment.

Intel® Quick Sync Video
Delivers fast conversion of video for portable media players, online sharing, and video editing and authoring.

Intel® Clear Video HD
Visual quality and color fidelity enhancements for HD playback and immersive Web browsing.

Intel® InTru™ 3D
Stereoscopic 3-D Blu-ray* playback in full 1080p resolution over HDMI* 1.4 and premium audio.

Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions
A set of new instructions to improve software performance for floating point-intensive applications such as audio processing, audio codecs, and image and video editing applications.

Integrated Memory Controller
An integrated memory controller offers stunning memory read/write performance through efficient prefetching algorithms, lower latency, and higher memory bandwidth.

Intel® Smart Cache
The shared cache is dynamically allocated to each processor core, based on workload. This significantly reduces latency, improving performance.

Intel® Virtualization Technology4
Allows one hardware platform to function as multiple “virtual” platforms. Offers improved manageability by limiting downtime and maintaining productivity by isolating computing activities into separate partitions.

Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions
New AES instructions add hardware acceleration to AES algorithms and speeds up the execution of AES applications.

Thermal Solution for Boxed Processors
Includes a four-pin connector for fan speed control to help minimize the acoustic noise levels generated from running the fan at higher speeds for thermal performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Exellent processor for number crunching No matter if you are crunching numbers for stock market forecasting or playing GTA V, this processor does it's work well. 17 August 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good CPU Bought this last week to go with my Asus Maximus VII Ranger, I have to say it's alot better than my old CPU. It's powerful right out of the box and deserves to be bough if your not much of an overclocker. Would recommend to anyone. 09 March 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good - AFAIK It's difficult to say how this compares to other cpu's unless you spend all day building and testing PCs but this one arrived promptly and installed with no more than the usual (ie huge) amount of hassle when upgrading PC hardware. I'm using it for music production. On an ASUS Z97-A it's certainly a lot faster than my previous setup (ASUS P5QE / Intel E4800), and appears good value for money. 12 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great performance for the price The I7 4790 is an excellent high end processor if you're not interested in overclocking, it runs nice and cool and has no trouble with pretty much everything you throw at it, highly recommended. 14 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Processor. If you are not into over clocking this chip is fast with a very quiet fan. 12 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by You get what you pay for! If you have demanding software then a Core i7 is a must, pay the extra for it coz you'll not be disappointed. Love the way it runs silently and and fairly cool, took on some fairly taxing software and hardly broke sweat.....come to the dark side and get one of these babies, you know it makes sense!!!! 19 July 2014

Answer:
The 4790 is a little bit faster than the 4770 since it's a newer processor with a higher stock clock, the 4770 was released in 2013 while the 4790 was released 2014.
Since the price is more or less the same the 4790 is preferable.

Answer:
Yes, but due to some weird internal wizardry each core is dual I think so it shows up as 8 cores under Device manager. More than enough anyway.
