Rated 2 out of 5 by from Difficult to fit and extremely poor documentation I got this item to fit in a machine I built for a friend who needed the data security provided by a RAID array as it allows for a RAID 1 mirror pair and a hot spare. The main reason I chose this unit was the drive failure LED function provided. Unfortunately the documentation says almost nothing about how to use this function, simply labelling the 6-pin header as "HDD FAIL IN" (with no pin information) and stating that the fail signal must be provided by the host (but not what signal is required). It took a lot of searching the Internet to find that the three right hand pins of the header are not used and that the left hand pins need to be connected to 0V to illuminate the respective LED red. Unfortunately the RAID controller I had selected (LSI MegaRAID 9271-4i) used different signalling, using pairs of pins on a header (again badly documented) to drive LED's to indicate failed disks. This mismatch was resolved by using an Opto-Isolator where the isolator LED's were driven by the RAID controller and the isolator phototransistors pulled the drive cage pins to ground. This arrangement got around the problem that the cathode connections on the RAID controller were about 1.8V above the drive cage's ground voltage.
