Date Issued: 21st Oct 2008

You've probably read the USB Tekspek, and perhaps your intrigue, or product interest, has lead you to look up Firewire as well. The two are similar in some respects, particularly some of the products that use the two technologies. However, Firewire has its differences, which means it has both benefits and drawback when compared to USB. This Tekspek will look at Firewire and also look at it with respect to USB.

Icy Box IB-RD3662U3S External RAID with EasySwap for 2 x 3.5" SATA - RAID 0,1,JBOD - USB 3.0/eSATA is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Setting up the Icybox! The build quality and value of this item are unquestionable! Sturdy, modern looking and well finished. (as well as being very heavy) Transfer speeds up to 80mbps over a USB3.0 hub. Very effective fan keeps the unit and drives nice and cool - Icybox... a very fitting name! The problems I encountered were setting up the drives and configuring the raid. The instructions included are the 'quick setup' type and are woefully inadequate and will have a user not familiar with this technology quickly pulling their hair out! First you need to set the raid switch to JBOD (just a bunch of drives) mode, install the new drives into the box and restart it, as soon as Windows recognises the drives as separates you can format and partition them, this is best done from within the Windows partition and drive utility. Then turn off the box, switch the raid switch to whichever setting you require and restart it, If you have chosen RAID1 like I have then Windows will see the box as one drive, when writing to the drives both lights will blink pink/blue together as the data is written to them at the same time. If you have set it up wrong only one drive light will blink. If you try and format the drives in other modes as the instructions imply you should Windows will only see one drive or the other and not both, therefore you can only format one drive or the other, installing both drives together causes a conflict with the box constantly mounting and dismounting the drives in a loop over and over - very annoying and time consuming until you find the solution, there is hardly any information on the internet about setting up these drives properly so I hope this helps any future purchasers. NEVER remove both drives from the enclosure at the same time as you will lose the raid configuration, partition information and ultimately all of your data. Take only one drive out and replace it with a new one (hot swappable) in the event of a drive failure. Thanks for reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value for money but a little lacking in quality I currently have this drive operating in Raid-0 with two Hitachi 4TB drives. No real issues to note with regards to functionality, as it has worked flawlessly so far. Currently connected via USB 3.0 I get descend sequential speeds of large file transfers, usually between 150MBps to 100MBps. Good speeds for an external drive. I do not use the eSata however so I cannot comment on it. Overall the connectivity options are excellent and it can support the internal drives in the standard arrays that most come with. The only things that so far have been a bit of an annoyance so far are: 1. The drive does vibrate when in operation which can be slightly annoying due to the sound it makes, I keep it on a mat to dampen the operational sound. 2. The installed fan's bearings have started to fail after about a year of service and the fan has developed a rustling sound. 3. Additionally one of the blue LEDs has failed on the second drives operation indicator. The red and orange still work fine so not too much of a pain. If you have OCD is could be a problem. I could have returned it but it is such a small bunch of silly things it would not be worth it. I have resolved the first two issues easily enough, I replaced the fan (which are quite cheap) and kept the drive on a mat to combat the vibrations. I cannot say for certain if the drive vibrates specifically due to the HDDs I have installed in particular or just the internal setup that allows them to not matter which drives are installed. I purchased this drive when it first came out so it may have purely been a starting batch collection of small issues. The issues are very minor to be honest and I would not be to concerned if you are deciding to purchase this drive. Please bear in mind my issues could have been isolated as Googling has not yielded any similar problems
