Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not work. Returned for refund. Very slow transfer speeds. Corrupted data on one hard drive. The build quality was fair, however I tried on multiple machines and it either did not work at all or would disconnect continuously. Returned unit. To be far this may have been a faulty unit but confirmed my decision to stick to Vantec NexStar, nothinng beats Vantec's quality, price and performance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems well-made and works well Robust, has some stand-offs inside the metal case to keep the hard disc circuit-board away from the metal case. It might be fiddly to take the disc out again but I may have removed the wrong end, I didn't bother to read the instructions, but the disc that's going in there will be staying in there for the forseeable future so that's not an issue for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice I fitted a 1Tb HD and later a 256GB SSD drive in this unit and it worked very well in both cases. I have tried it connected via USB 3.0 and eSATA and it performed very well giving transfer speeds up to 170MB/s. Even when lying on the carpet, it kept cool!

Questions & Answers

Does this come with any connecting cables, and does it need a USB connection for power when using eSata (as the Akasa unit seems to need)?
Asked by: IanUK
Yes this unit does come with connecting cables. It is USB powered and it does required USB to power the eSATA

Power Source

Does this drive require external power or does it take power from USB/eSATA?
Asked by: DaveWhite
It has a DC 5v input port but no lead is supplied for that. It does not require power for USB3 but all drives require power for e-sata as e-sata does not supply power over the interface. I have not tried the e-sata yet but I've read elsewhere that power for this can be supplied via USB3 but I don't know how the conflict between the two interfaces being connected at the same time is resolved, i.e. does it show up as USB3, e-sata or both? There is an e-satap standard (with the extra p for power) that does supply power but it's rarely seen and this unit doesn't have it.
