Audeze LCD2 Classic - A Legend Reborn
When Audeze's original LCD-2 headphone were released in 2009, they took planar magnetic technology to a new level and instantly became a hit around the world, due to thier extended bass response and super-fast transient detail.
A New Classic
The "LCD-2C" is a brand new take on the original 2009 LCD-2 model, now coming as standard with a lightweight suspension headband and special crystal-infused nylon rings, which are lighter than the original wood with remodeled audio jacks.
Sonically, it features the slightly warm sound signature of the original LCD2 driver and keeps the weight down by being engineered without the "Fazor" waveguide found in the latest LCD-2 revisions.
Audeze's free Reveal plugin has filter presets for thier different models of headphone. This can provide the user with a similar tonal balance to what they would hear from mastering grade studio monitors in an acoustically treated room.
This means that for studio work, Reveal can let you mix or master almost any location while making sure that your mixes will translate well to most any sound system.
Lake People G103-S Headphone Amplifier
The G103-S is a fantastic headphone amp for studio use, it has a clean, detailed sound and can deliver over one Watt of power, being optimised for low noise and low distortion.
It has a high quality ALPS volume dial, two headphone outputs and unbalanced RCA inputs. It could be described as deceptively simple, but it really doesnt need any more controls as it just does a great job of amplifiying very accurately, the signal sent to the unit.
It's extemely detailed and is a great, affordable pairing for most studio phones including mid priced planars such as Audeze LCD-2C, high end pro models like Focal Clear Pro & AKG K812, plus of course studio classics like the Sennheiser HD650 and the 80 & 250 ohm Beyer DT models.
The case of PHONE-AMP G103 is made of black anodized aluminium, including the front- and back panels. This makes it very sturdy and provides excellent electrical conductivity for minimising EMC interferance.
If you feel that you need more power from the default state, it is possible to change the gain, adding up to another 6dB to the output.
Innderfidelity.com - G103-S Review
"So how does the thing sound? The first thing that struck me was the pitch black background. I'm not using that term in the sort of nebulous, audiophile way. I mean the background was literally silent, absent any hiss, hum, grit, or other undesirables. This was the case with everything---low impedance or high impedance cans, planar-magnetic headphones, and ultra-sensitive in ear monitors. The channel matching was very tight, with just a barely perceptible imbalance at ultra-quiet levels. Any real world listening gets well beyond that range.
From there, my listening notes focus on low frequency reproduction. This amp performs far better than the price would suggest. Using headphones with really good low frequency performance, I heard loads of texture and detail. It didn't come across as being emphasized at all, but due to the high amount of clarity it was something that my ear was drawn to. ..Mids were nice and clear as well---reasonably transparent and open sounding. I believe this is what people tend to refer to as "getting out of the way of the music", as cliche as that may be.
If one was on a fixed budget and really wanted to try a pair of planar headphones, I can't think of a better entry level amp to recommend."
