AMD Athlon X4 860K Black Edition, FM2+, Kaveri, Quad Core, 3.7GHz, 4GHz Boost, 95W, with Near-Silent Cooler, Retail is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great CPU Bought this for my daughter who's nine, she enjoys Overwatch, Battleborn and other similar games. Plays all these games with great ease.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good mid-level CPU with a disappointing stock cooler This is good mid-level cpu - paired with a SSD, dedicated GPU and 8GB of RAM it runs anything that I can throw at it. The stock cooler is very noisy however and I would reccomend replacing it with a third-part fan and heatsink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great budget enthusiast processor Being a hardware enthusiast I had to buy one of these, just to see what it could do. The answer is, it does stuff really well! You can spend a lot of time reading reviews and write ups, I know I do. Many of these reviews will basically paint the 860k in a poor light. After testing this processor I find it difficult to agree with the reviews. I've tested an i3-4160 and it is a superb processor, but I would argue the day-to-day performance of the 860k (when tweaked) is on par. Many of the reviews will pit it against the Pentium but I really can't see how the Pentium would be able to keep up. I think if you are after a budget processor for gaming you have two choices, if you have no interest in overclocking and you simply want to plug the processor into the board and that's it then go for a high clocked i3. If you like overclocking and playing with your machine at the BIOS level then buy this. I have overclocked this processor to 4.3ghz at pretty much stock volts, I needed to bump it slightly as my board (AsRock a88x extreme4+) has quite a bit of vdroop and only an on/off LLC setting that quite frankly doesn't cut the mustard. That said I must recommend this processor with some caveats, as I have previously mentioned it is more of an enthusiast processor and to get the most out of it you really need to spend some time overclocking, testing and benchmarking to squeeze the best performance from it. Secondly it isn't as 'budget' as it's price would suggest. It will end up costing you similarly as much as an i3 system because you need a decent board (88x chipset) and you NEED a new cooler. The stock cooler is not adequate, the material and the fin design is poor and the fan is noisy as soon as it gets over 40%. It will struggle to keep the processor <70c at stock clocks under heavy load. In contrast I am running a Corsair H90 closed loop liquid cooler and the chip does not go 50c+ under Prime95 testing. The poor provided cooler is my prime reason for marking this product down one point for value and two points for quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Recommended MUST BUY!!! I have this CPU in my Gaming PC and It has been absolutely incredible. Paired with 8GB 1600 Mhz Dual Channel RAM and an EVGA 2GB GT 740 I can run even some of the most recent games and have no worries. I can play Dying Light with highest possible settings and it doesn't even find it remotely difficult to run. For the price I doubt you will find anything that is as good as this. I seriously suggest this if you are building a Gaming PC with a tight budget, it is most certainly worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great choice for budget and mid-range builds, good upgrade on FM2+ socket This AMD chip is best proof that a CPU for ~60 pounds can meet today's demands. This processor is one of the best performers you can get and is probably the best value for the price you can get in the world. With the price value it only competes with 6 core FX6300. What you get in the box: - AMD chip - Stock cooler - AMD Athlon sticker for those who like to decorate their cases CPU performance - 4/5 At 3.7GHz it manages to serve OS pretty quickly in terms of web browsing, multitasking, complex calculations and more demanding file compression. It will run most high-end games (you do not need super 8 core chips these days yet), and you will still have plenty room for background tasks. Example: Witcher 3 (I think this could be best reference) consumes 45-50% of CPU, while mostly focused on GPU ( I paired it with R9 380 so you can see CPU does not play a huge role. Overclocking - 4/5 I have managed to overclock at 4.3 at stable without voltage increase and no little clock reduction with corsair h90. Please bear in mind that 4.4GHZ and higher will give unstable frequencies and dropping perfomance up to 20% which could be drawback for some overclockers. Power consumption and TDP - 4/5 I think 95W matches its architecture and will produce moderate amount of heat which can be easily dealed with £20 coolers (I suggest Cooler Master ones) even with good overclock. It will be absolutely fantastic with hydro coolers giving a super stable maximum 4.3GHz speeds. Stock cooler is just good for base clock speed as it will come very noise due to overheating CPU on higher so I do not recommend fitting it at all. Compatibility Please make sure your motherboard BIOS is updated to its newest version for this processor even if manufacturer says it supports Kaveri type. Some older motherboards with FM2+ will just not post with this CPU if not updated/supported. Limitations Maximum memory speed of 1866Mhz, high-end GPUs over R9 380 or GTX970 will be limited and will not use its fully graphics potential. Overall quality and performance is excellent for asked price. By the way this is the fastest CPU you can get for the FM2+ socket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good all round I decided to buy this processor for a gaming machine. While I could have possibly found better value for money with Intel at this budget range, I decided to go with AMD. Easily clocked mine at 4.1 Ghz, but don't have any plans on clocking it further. Quite happy churning the day to day tasks as well as most games quite comfortably.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Performance Overclocked and cooled with a Seidon 120v v2 and the combo works great on a budget. With the right GPU it runs games on highest settings without a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast processor, stable and good for gaming. I bought this as a side-grade from a Phenom II X4 3.2GHz. I have found the whole system much snappier. Lightroom does not freeze any more and is noticeably faster. It was much better than I expected. I think the RAM makes a big difference too going from 1333/1600MHz to 2133MHz on the new platform. I was considering an i5 but for the price difference I went for an R9 390 rather than an R9 380. Made a much bigger difference in games than a CPU ever will. Only one issue, check motherboard compatibility before ordering. If you are unsure ask Scan support. They know their stuff and can update the bios on the motherboard before it ships. Otherwise you may end up needing to get a cheap FM2 processor just to update the BIOS.

Questions & Answers

Does this come with a CPU cooler?

And if it does, what are the dimensions of it? I want to put this in a Mini ITX case.
Asked by: robincm
It does come with a cpu cooler, but I would urge you to get a third-party low-profile cooler as the cooling performance of this is not great, and the fan itself is noisy.

Motherboard compatability

Hi, Can I use this CPU with the MSI AMD A78M-E45 V2. I have a separate graphics card, so I don't require onboard graphics. Anthony
Asked by: Antonbhoy
I am afraid you might need to fully update your BIOS in order to serve Kaveri type AMDs especially 860K. Check BIOS version on your motherboard and manufacturers website for compatibilty. If it is updated you should be all right, just insert the chip and it will post succesfully.
