Product Overview

HelioSeal® Delivers Twice the Capacity Using One-Quarter Less Power

One-third more capacity and 23% lower energy consumption. Available today. That’s the power of helium. Delivering the industry’s leading capacity at 8TB, Ultrastar He8 is based on the widely accepted and proven HelioSeal® platform. HelioSeal technology replaces air with helium inside the drive, reducing air turbulence and enabling 7Stac™, a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor. Ultrastar He8 goes beyond what any air-based HDD can do and seamlessly integrates into virtually any mainstream enterprise environment. Cooler and quieter with industry-leading power efficiency (Watts/TB) and no-compromise performance, the Ultrastar He8 lays the foundation for future growth in massive scale-out environments.

TCOptimized™ – Increasing Storage Efficiency to Drive Down Data Center TCO

We recognize the growing pressures that data centers face. Volume is expanding, operating costs are rising while budgets remain flat. Lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO) has become the focus of data center architects. Ultrastar He8 provides the best TCO value proposition and delivers greater storage efficiency with breakthroughs in capacity, power efficiency and best-in-class performance. This HelioSeal hard drive achieves up to 3X higher random write performance than the prior generation, Ultrastar He6, thanks to HGST media cache architecture, a disk-based caching technology. He8 offers a 12Gb/s SAS (6Gb/s SATA) interface for easy integration into high performance data centers. Features like Rebuild Assist dramatically reduce RAID rebuild times and maintain system performance during the rebuild process.

Data Security with Industry-Leading Quality and Reliability

Compliance and privacy requirements drive the need for increased data security. Ultrastar He8 offers security and encryption options to protect data from unauthorized use. Instant Secure Erase (ISE) models expedite drive redeployment and retirement. Encryption models protect data with hardware-based encryption, including a Trusted Computing Group (TCG) option with FIPS 140-2 certification, Level 2. The Ultrastar He8 extends HGST’s long-standing tradition of reliability leadership with a 2.5M-hour MTBF rating and a 5-year limited warranty. HGSTs drive reliability and security options also help lower data center TCO.

HGST Quality and Service

HGST’s Ultrastar He8 extends the company’s long-standing tradition of performance and capacity leadership. The proven drive design enables high reliability and availability to customer data. Ultrastar quality, performance and world class technical support and service provides customers with a lower total cost of ownership over previous generations.HGST drives are backed by an array of technical support and services, which may include customer and integration assistance. HGST is dedicated to providing a complete portfolio of HDD, SSD and software solutions to help the world harness the power of data.

8TB WD Ultrastar He8 0F23657 SAS Hard Drive, 3.5" HDD, SAS 12Gb/s, 7200rpm, 4.16ms, 128MB Cache is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Moving from WD Red 6Tb, and this is better in every field at the moment If you can use these drives, they are a significant improvement over WD Red EFRX 6Tb models. They never seem to be the bottleneck in the copy process. Network transfers max out at about 110 and stay there, and SATA->SAS transfers are always bottlenecked by source. That said, this is IF you can use them. SAS3 controllers, or with careful controller/cable selection, SAS2 controllers have no problem. Unlike SATA drives on a SAS controller (which work just fine), this SAS3 drive is unlikely to work on a SATA controller, despite there being several cable options to connect them. This is something to consider. This is also a 2-channel SAS3 drive, so connecting via a single-channel link to an SAS2 controller (like I have done) will limit you to 600Mb/s rather than 1200Mb/s maximum rate. Given that this is not an SSD, it's unlikely to saturate the single channel though. Hooked up to an LSI-2308 controller (SAS2), this drive seems to deal with anything I can push at it, much better than the WD 6Tb EFRX Red model drives that I was using before this drive. As for EFAX Red 6Tb, I can only guess because mine didn't last long enough to test throughput, but I'd guess it's a bigger improvement than EFAX because the 6Tb EFAX is SMR. I haven't tried it as a replacement RAID drive (mainly because I don't run RAID personally - it's too difficult to rebuild with much over 1Tb individual drive size), but as a single drive it's one of the most impressive "spinning rust" drives I've ever used. In summary, if you're after a "Conventional" drive that doesn't have Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), to replace a different drive that doesn't have SMR, this drive is ideal as long as you can connect it. I'm sure that, if your controller allows mixing of SATA and SAS drives, this would be a worthy replacement of a non-SMR drive in a RAID array, along the lines of a WD Red 2-6Tb, and a window into both SAS3, Enterprise level drives and a larger RAID array overall (once you've migrated all your existing drives to this model), although to be fair if I was planning to re-raid an array with these drives, I'd probably wait for someone else to confirm that SAS and SATA can be used in the same array before commiting to a purchase. That said, the current price is unusually low, and as a result of testing the first drive I've just bought another. I have a feeling these might be end-of-line at the <£200 price point that I'm buying them at, and at that price they are incredible value, but if they're really end-of-line I say Don't buy these...leave them for me! :-)
