Product Overview Industry’s First Hardware RAID adapter with Tri-Mode SerDes Technology
Broadcom enables high performance storage connectivity and flexible system designs that support any combination of NVMe, SAS and SATA devices with the industry’s first hardware RAID adapter with Tri-Mode SerDes. The MegaRAID 9400 series of adapters expands on the industry-leading family of 12Gb/s storage adapters from Broadcom with 8 and 16 port internal, external and combination Tri-Mode port options.

NVMe Performance Gains for Storage
The MegaRAID Tri-Mode storage adapters bring NVMe performance benefits to the storage tier by providing connectivity and data protection that MegaRAID technology has offered for over 20 years for SAS/SATA interfaces. Based on the dual-core SAS3516 or SAS3508 RAID on Chip (ROC) and 72-bit DDR4-2133 SDRAM, these controllers provide bandwidth and IOPS performance increases compared to the previous generation and are ideal for high-end servers utilizing internal storage or connecting to large-scale external storage enclosures.

Endless design flexibility using Tri-Mode Controllers
Broadcom’s Tri-Mode SerDes Technology enables operation of NVMe, SAS, or SATA storage devices in a single drive bay. A single controller can operate in all three modes concurrently servicing NVMe, SAS, or SATA drives. The controller negotiates between the speeds and protocols to seamlessly work with any of the three types of storage devices. Tri-Mode support provides a non-disruptive way to evolve existing data centre infrastructure. By upgrading to a Tri-Mode controller, users can expand beyond SAS/SATA and use NVMe without major changes to other system configurations. Features • Up to 8 storage interface PCIe links. Each link supporting x4 or x2 link widths up to 8.0 GT/s (PCIe Gen3) per lane.
• SFF-9402 Compliant, Connector Pin-out.
• SFF-8485 Compliant, SGPIO.
• RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 10, 50
• CacheVault flash back-up at power fail.

Reviews
8 Port Broadcom MegaRAID 9440-8i, 12Gb/s SAS/SATA/NVMe, PCIe 3.1, LP Bracket is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value, entry-level, hardware RAID adapter I chose this RAID adapter for two reasons. 1, it's full hardware RAID and 2, it's supported in Ubuntu 18.04 (more on that later). Additionally, it seemed to have had a recent massive price drop. During my long search for a h/w RAID card I'd seen the 'perfect' adapter but it was £800+ and this '2nd best' was £500+, both more than I could really afford. Then suddenly, I started seeing the 9440-8i being offered for less than £300 so I bought one. Cables are extra. It arrived as a well packaged bare card. All documentation, drivers, management software, etc. are downloadable from Broadcom's website. When plugged into my PC, after a couple of reboots, its ROM was integrated into the PC's BIOS setup, from where the RAID is configured. I bought it for use with Seagate BarraCuda 2TB ST2000DM008 SATA III drives (which are NOT included in Broadcom's list of supported drives) and there have been no problems. Being entry-level, there's no facility to add a battery backup module and there's no audio alarm (I have a project in mind to create one). There are 2-pin headers for activity and alert LEDs and the ROM can be configured to send email alerts. Management of the adapter from the operating system is done via a web browser or shell command line. As regards support for Ubuntu 18.04, I've had a few problems. At one point, I temporarily gave up and installed Windows 10, just to convince myself that my hardware was integrating correctly. I created, expanded, deliberately broke (i.e. removed drives, erased them, etc.) and subsequenty recovered various RAID configurations, and it worked perfectly. My Ubuntu problems have been partly because I'm a beginner with Ubuntu and partly because some of the instructions in the Ubuntu software and documentation are (in my opinion) poorly-written and occasionally conflicting. Having done the successful Windows tests, I've discovered that Ubuntu is having some issue with the IOMMU setting on my motherboard. The system BIOS settings that work with Windows are not working with Ubuntu. With IOMMU enabled, the browser can't find the adapter and gives me a blank page, with IOMMU disabled I can access the adapter and disks but the configuration menus are missing. I doubt if Broadcom would say that it's driver and LSA software are supported under Ubuntu 18.04 if they aren't, so at the moment I'm assuming that my problems are due to my lack of Ubuntu knowledge. Overall, I'd recommend this card to anyone using Windows 10, and as I'm 'almost there' with Ubuntu, would probably recommend it to experienced Ubuntu users too. Only time will tell whether or not I change my opinion about its use with Ubuntu.
