After a while mine started to vibrate which was coming from the HDD trays, pushing them lightly would stop the vibration but it would come back after a short while. Aside from that it was a good product that worked well, good transfer speeds and even worked well as a plex server. I did have another issue where it wouldn't update due to saying not enough space even though there was plenty.
Close to being a great product

Top quality product, with ample expandability. Highly recommended for a small office or for photo / video editors.

First of all the unit ships with 2Gb of RAM and can be upgraded by adding another 4Gb BUT Synology does not officially support third party memory and does not publish a list of compatible memory parts - so how do you upgrade the NAS? Answer = pot-luck! I contacted Synology support and that was the outcome. Not great for such an expensive unit.
Mine has also developed a very loud cooling fan 'whine' and the fan speed profile adjustment does not seem to work one way or another.
Synology's performance claims too cost me unnecessary expense.
I thought, great the unit has 4 x 1Gbps LAN ports that support Link Aggregation, I know I'll buy a switch that supports LACP / Port Trunking and a Quad port Gigabit NIC for my PC and get a 4Gbps pipe to the NAS box... WRONG! The DS1815+ Does indeed support a Dynamic Link Aggregation but this only allows it to service a high work load environment where there are many incoming requests from multiple clients on the same subnet but it does not support SLA (Static Link Aggregation) which is what would be needed for a 'fatter' pipe to my single client PC. So I bought an expensive Quad port Enterprise NIC and Switch for nothing...
None of the above relating to the memory issue or the misleading performance data is present on the official Synology product page.
I eventually found a RAM module that worked but only after buying another part that didn't and while I was able to max out a single 1Gbps connection to the DS1815+ I got nothing like the boasted max read and write speeds of 400+MB/s.
I would not recommend this product.
