The arrival of the solid-state drive (SSD) has revolutionised the speed at which modern PCs perform common tasks. This is because SSDs have no moving parts, compared to larger, bulkier mechanical drives, thus they store information on memory chips. This means that accesses, reads and writes are many, many times faster

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are fast becoming the must-have PC components of 2010. Serving as primary storage space for high-end computers, SSD's super-fast transfer rates and near-instant accesses offer genuine advantages over traditional spindle-based magnetic drives.

A motherboard’s main job is to act as a conduit between the various hardware elements that make up a PC. It needs to be able to link the desired CPU(s), system memory, graphics card, hard drive(s), and add-in cards and enable them to work in harmony.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The way forward for system drives! Super compact installed on the motherboard itself. Very fast, can be used in RAID with two installed for even faster read/write. A fraction of the size of a 2.5" SSD. Got to be the way forward for system drives.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stitched up like a kipper! I bought this thinking it was an SM951, like I already had (from another supplier). It is an SM951, but AHCI, not NMVe. My own fault for paying pretty much the same money for an inferior product. It wasn't until I opened the anti-static bag that I noticed the difference... Too late. Bah! It would have been nice to have been warned that two products share the same name... but quite different performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it :) Works great in my ASUS X99 Deluxe as my boot drive. I'm tripple booting and have been through a lot of pain to get that working, so let me save you some by pointing out that this drive supports UEFI only - legacy windows will NOT install on this. You're welcome ;)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Intuitive but well worth the effort. When I first enquired about this SSD and asked if it was difficult to set up I was told all I had to do was fit it and my Windows Install Media would find it as an OS install destination. WRONG This wee beasty caused me a fair bit of hair pulling. Don't get me wrong I think I would have had similar problems with any SSD. Maybe it was my setup (ASUS X99 mobo, Win 8.1) Turned out I had to create a bootable USB drive holding an image of win 8.1 to install from and also had to edit some bios settings. Searching forums online eventually got me up and running with this beauty. I still cant get over how blisteringly fast this SSD is! Highly recommended.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly fast I was using an old corsair F3 SSD before I got this, cannot believe the difference in speed between the two. I'm not even running it at full speed due to only have PCIE 2.0 not 3.0 that it is capable of.

Questions & Answers

Can this be used as a boot drive on Asus x99 motherboards?

Asked by: SouthLan
Yes, I'm using it on the X99 Deluxe. But note that this drive supports a UEFI Windows install only - the partition table needs to be GUID not MBR. If you are formatting the drive using OSX's disk utils then do not format the windows partitions as FAT, or OSX will create a hybrid GUID/MBR table which will prevent windows from installing on this device (it will see this as MBR and refuse).

Will you be stocking the SM951 NVMe version? If so, when?

Asked by: mattCCSP
The NVMe version of SM951 is listed in various sizes (128, 256 and 512) - but it says stock overdue since 18/08/15. However I guess this means that they are due in stock imminently. Just search SM951 and it will list AHCI and NVMe versions separately.
