I got this to work in a FreeBSD fileserver for ZFS ZIL/L2ARC caches. For this I needed to flash with the IT firmware rather than use the default IR (raid) firmware. Initially, I flashed with the latest version but this turned out to be buggy giving lots of SATA errors. On advice from FreeBSD users, I downgraded to a previous version and it's now working just fine. I flashed from a DOS USB drive, the most dangerous part being you have to erase the flash before loading in the new firmware, and if powerloss occurs or it screws up, you will have bricked it and need to return it. Thankfully, this didn't happen.
Not the cheapest (or most expensive) HBA, but I did try a much cheaper StarTech one from a different supplier which was not dead but seriously malfunctioning on arrival, as was one of the connectors on the breakout cable. Thankfully not the case here.
Under FreeBSD I get decent transfer rates just shy of 500MB/s (depending on the SSD). I haven't done any special tuning.
