Firewire
Firewire
Date Issued: 21st Oct 2008

You've probably read the USB Tekspek, and perhaps your intrigue, or product interest, has lead you to look up Firewire as well. The two are similar in some respects, particularly some of the products that use the two technologies. However, Firewire has its differences, which means it has both benefits and drawback when compared to USB. This Tekspek will look at Firewire and also look at it with respect to USB.

System Buses & Bandwidth
Date Issued: 21st Oct 2008

In computing terms, system buses are used to connect various components to the motherboard’s core logic and, often, to each other. Modern PCs run with a multitude of high-speed buses ranging from the interconnects between, say, the chipset and the CPU, graphics card, memory, and peripherals.

If you've used a computer for any duration of time you'll have come across the terms “kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte” and so on. Then there's “kilobit, megabit and gigabit” to add a bit of confusion and to top it all off you've maybe heard or read terms like “gibibyte” on occasion.

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Doesn't work properly We started buying these as we were unable to get hold of the 610 model. This model is pure rubbish in comparison. USB 3 hardware devices are either not seen or seen as USB 2 devices and therefore don't work properly. If you can't get the 610 model then look at getting a Startech one instead (ST4300USB3) 14 January 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by Fell apart after about 6 months The USB 3 connector on the back of the device is held on by two small solder points. When plugging in the USB3 cable it all fell apart. Opened up the case to re-solder it and it's very cheap and nasty in there. Nice case, horrible internals. 30 October 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good product This USB Hub is very nice for home users. Charging port has no data connection, just charging devices. Unfortunately I've got unit with annoying PSU. It's making whistling noise very often which I thing will make PSU faulty soon. The case of USB Hub is ok, aluminium looks nice. I never tried to use more than 2 usb sticks at once, but it was ok. I can honestly recommend this product. 13 September 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by solid pc compatility works with all versions of windows with no problems 04 November 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good quality at a price Good USB3 hub, seems robust. had expected the fast charge port to be on the top but its the right-most socket. 1metre USB3 lead to PC included and Power supply is rated at 3.5 Amps more than adequate unless you fully load every port to max. 09 August 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by A well made hub. This is a neat small well made hub. it works, USB X4 with a dedicated charging port. The appx 1/3 metre cable supplied for the computer link is a USB 3 micro plug with a standard USB type A on the other end. This cable had an intermittent micro plug, as I have plenty of these, I used a better quality one. I think that was just bad luck. It also has a reasonable mains power supply to help with current distribution. Overall it's been very useful, but as someone else said, it needs feet, it now has has a set I fitted my self. 14 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Brilliant little hub Very pleased with this - even smaller than it looks - the sockets on the side are quite close together but the one on the top is a great idea. Lightning fast as well. Both included USB cable and power supply cable are about 1.2m (4 ft!) long. Only slight niggle is that it could do with some rubber feet on the bottom. 28 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by USB3 Hub This is a fantastic hub.. Smaller in size than I expected but for me, this was an advantage.. 17 February 2014

Answer:
It's a USB 3 hub, that means it's backwards compatible with USB2, so yes, it's USB connectible. the cable is appx 1/3 metre.

Answer:
Yes it has a cable with standard USB plug for the PC and the rather strangely shaped USB3 connection at the hub end. The length of the cable ignoring the plugs is 110cm. All the Hub ports are normal USB shape. It will accept USB2 peripherals too at their lower speeds.

Answer:
It does connect via USB 3 and I think the cable is around 1M, but I would either look at the 610 model or the Startech ST4300USB3 as this one doesn't work well.

Answer:
It does come with a UK 3 Pin power adapter, but I would either look at the 610 model or the Startech ST4300USB3 as this one doesn't work well.
