3XS FA7i

Our 3XS FA7i system is based around the latest Intel "Coffee Lake" range with this model offering the i7 9700K 8-core CPU solution. As with all of our audio systems, the models found in our ready to ship series are all fully tested and configured to ensure the widest compatibility possible with common studio software programs, and to ensure the smoothest of experiences when running your studios crucial tools and applications.

The system has 16GB of Corsair memory included, which we find is ample for a lot of production duties carried out on this level of machine. We do however ensure that we leave you two additional memory slots free, just so that if you wish to expand further in the future then you will have an easy upgrade route ready and waiting.

We also include a fast 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD for your included Windows OS installation, which means that you should also have plenty of space in which to setup your sequencer of choice, as well as all of your plugins. Alongside the OS SSD, we also include an additional 1TB Seagate Barracuda mechanical drive for general storage and your sample libraries. If you also wish to migrate over your old project drives or if you wish to ensure that you can add in additional storage in the future, then rest assured that the case in this system has 6 more drive bays making it certain to be able to accommodate any future storage expansion that you wish to carry out.

This i7 based configuration offers, as sizable amount of performance is second only to its i9 9900K big brother in the Intel’s current mid-range line-up. With its lack of hyper-threading but larger number of “true cores”, it offers a sizable amount of performance for anyone’s home or project studio. The lack of shared cores through Hyper-threading can also make this particularly suitable for anyone recording or performing at super low ASIO buffer rates, where artists should be able to extract the upmost performance from these chips. As with all of our studio-based systems, the performance to noise level is a key concern, where we always strive to ensure we get the maximum amount of performance with the least amount of disruptive system noise through careful component consideration.

We build with hardware from renowned firms such as “Fractal Design”, “be quiet!” & “Noctua” to ensure that our case and cooling options strike a balance between great performance and ensuring that you have the minimal distractions or interruptions to your workflow.

Processors to Power your PC

Audio PC CPU

The CPU choice for your system is another important decision for your recording setup, as this where your processing performance comes from when it comes to writing and recording music. Audio handling works on a buffer system where the data is captured in a regular cycle and passed over to the CPU to carry out the important work, meaning that as long as everything is processed before the next buffer fills up then everything great.

When the CPU fails to completely process all that data before the next buffer fills up, this is when we experience crackling in our audio signal. The general advice has always been that fast cores are important for audio work and to a degree this is very true, although once we have a number of chips running at roughly the same speed, then it switches to having more cores being better as that means that you can handle more channels overall.

Modern D.A.W software tends to be able to handle an ever growing number of cores with even the most basic of programs now being able to handle 12 cores (24 threads) and the vast majority of them can effectively manage 16 cores (32 threads) without issue. It is always worth checking what your D.A.W software of choice can handle effectively, as this will allow you to optimize best choice in matching your hardware to your software’s abilities.

Here in Scan we test and compare our available CPUs using the DAWBench testing suite, so we can understand the performance differences between these chips. You may not always need the highest performing machine in the range and for many smaller acts working largely with audio and perhaps only a few dozen channels may find one of our entry-level machines extremely effective for the task in hand.

The DAWBench DSP chart below shows the result of adding multiple instances of the SGA 1566 effect, stacked on a project until the audio starts to crackle as the CPU begins to overload. This gives us a baseline metric to compare the CPU’s against each other and a rough guide to how each system will compare against other solutions. Audio PC memory

Physical RAM is a key consideration for any audio system and a crucial one for composers working with larger sound collections. The memory functions as the local buffer between your storage and CPU, offering a place for your session to hold recorded audio and sample content for playback quickly by the sequencer.

Having enough RAM is crucial and for users working with small band projects where audio is used more than large sample libraries then 16GB tends to be a reasonable starting point, although some of those more demanding users may benefit from working with 32GB. For users working “in the box” like dance music producers and users scoring music to film then 32GB might prove to be your starting point and we always aim to include enough slots to allow you to upgrade further if required.

The benefits of RAM speed vary between platforms, with each model of Intel chip having a recommended RAM speed that it works with and we find that there are no real benefit for audio production specifically to be obtained by exceeding these. AMD in contrast benefits from having its RAM closely matched to the internal bus and ensuring the timings are as tight as possible in order to allow the CPU to work at its very best.

With our pre-built systems, we choose the RAM with the knowledge above in mind and this will ensure that you get the very best from your system.

System Storage

Storage is a key concern for any modern composer or recording artist. Whilst storage drive sizes have grown exponentially over the years, traditional mechanical hard drives are quickly falling by the wayside for high performance machines. We use a number of different storage options for our systems and we always ensure that you have plenty of connections remaining in order that you may port over your own sample collection drives or expand your storage space as your needs grow.

M.2M.2. NVMe drives are the fastest of the storage options that we offer, with high performance drives providing up to 3500MB/s read and write speeds, we often use these as your Windows OS and program installation drive. Secondary slower, larger capacity options are also offered, as they tend to offer great value for sound library storage and most modern mainboards can support 2 or 3 of these card options.

SSDSolid state drives (SSD’s) share many the same benefits as M.2 drives in that they offer low latency and great access times when searching through your library, but they only max out at around 550MB/s read and write speeds. They do however offer better value on larger storage capacities with drives reaching up to 4TB in size, making this style of drive perfect for accessing and working with your sound collection.

HDDClassic hard disk drives (HDD’s) remain the cheapest mass storage option for backing up and archiving data. Offering a maximum transfer speed of around 180MB/s and due to the nature of the moving read head found in the design of mechanical drives, the natural physical latency makes them the slowest choice for sound library streaming in comparison to newer designs. They do however offer unmatched prices on larger capacities and this makes them ideal for keeping backups and archival of your data.

Audio System Optimization

Audio PC Latency Test

All of our audio systems are optimized in both the BIOS and Windows itself in order to ensure you get the best from your system. The core of this optimization is dealing with DPC (Deferred Procedure Call) which is a measurement of how long it takes for your audio to gain access to and then fully process your ASIO audio buffer.

Windows itself allows up to a 1000μs (microseconds) for each driver to process a cycle, whereas audio requirements state that we need the entire stack of software to process in less than 1000μs. This means if we have 20 plus programs and drivers looking to run, then anything that is poorly implemented may cause us problems, possibly manifesting as an audio overloading causing audio to break-up far earlier than it otherwise should.

All of our audio systems receive extended testing before leaving the factory, specifically testing them for possibility of CPU overloading and ensuring that you have plenty of overhead for your projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great system for in the box music production I am using Cubase 9 Pro with a Steinberg UR 22mkII Audio interface. The 3XS FA7i Audio Workstation allows me to get latency really low, around 9 milliseconds. I have projects with multiple Orchestral samples and complex synth patches which play with very low CPU usage so there is plenty of headroom for in the box production. The quality of the build is exceptional and the setup was very easy. I have two screens, one plugged into the HDMI socket, the other (a VGA screen) plugged into the display port via a VGA to DisplayPort adapter. It all works really well. It would be nice to have a couple of extra USB ports but this is solved with powered USB splitter boxes.

Having done a fair amount of research I felt Scan offered me what I required in a new DAW PC. I wasn't disappointed. Beautifully made and is everything that I'd hoped for, running Cubase and multiple plug ins with ease and it's so so quiet. i'd highly recommend this PC and the fantastic service that went with it

64 bit windows

Hi I’m interested in this workstation. I’m still using a few 32 bit plugins within my daw. My current laptop has both 32 bit and 64 bit windows and I bridge the plugins using j bridge. Will I be able to do the same with this system and also the copy of Windows it comes with Regards kirk

Hi, J-bridge will still work, although from experience it will be the most unstable part of the system. It’s been well over a decade since we got our first 64 OS, so whilst I understand the wish to keep tried and tested plugs around, by this stage any company worth its salt has moved to 64bit plugs a long time ago. So the concern is that any code brought across that is 32bit is unlikely to have been tuned and optimized for newer OS builds. I’d be tempted to say that unless it (the plugin in question) does something 100% unique, I’d looks around for something newer and more efficient. I hope this helps. Kind regards,

Integrated graphics card

How fast is the graphics card?will it play complex games! And can another graphics card be used if needed. Thanks

This PC has Intel integrated graphics in the CPU which is only suitable for Windows applications and basic games.
