Reviews
2TB Seagate Maxtor M3 Portable External HDD, 1xUSB 3.0, Bus Powered, Black, with SafetyKey, for Windows/Mac is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disk is OK, the software is DANGEROUS The drive itself is OK. This is the only positive thing I can say about this product. DO NOT - I repeat, DO NOT - install or use the software which comes with the drive (Clarus Drive Manager). I made the mistake of installing it and it silently wiped out hundreds of gigabytes of my data from the drive I wanted to have backed up (to the M3). Recent backups + an NTFS file recovery tool saved the day, but it was a harrowing experience nevertheless. If you decide to buy this drive, use another backup tool or just copy files by hand. AVOID the bundled software LIKE A PLAGUE!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does exactly what I wanted it to do I use this device to back up my MacBook pro. It appears to work well although (fortunately) I have not needed the back up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than happy to pay a sensible price for a great product. I’ve had a couple of external hard drives now, several of them have simply stopped working and made annoying rattling noises, but not this one. It is near on silent compared to my PC, has a very handy indicator light to show that it’s working, and has a very robust design which I am sure would prevent serious damage should it be dropped, a not uncommon phenomenon. All in all, a great product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First Impressions Replaces my ageing 2T external HD - with separate power supply and USB3 connector. Small, light and very quick to load files in Photoshop Bridge - impressive speed as expected with USB3 - currently has 1T stored. If it lasts at least 5 years then I will give the 5th star for build quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it is supposed to I just plugged it in and it worked. Very quiet and doesn't even get warm when used hard, so what more can I ask?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good: small, light and fast I am using this device under Linux, so I reformatted it with the ext3 file system. It works, and appears quite robust.

Questions & Answers

What file system does this external use?

Does this hdd have the FAT32 file system so I can use it with a PS4?
Asked by: Crackedfingers
Out of the box it will be NTFS as it is not specifically optimised for gaming consoles, but it is a simple matter to reformat it to FAT32 using your computer.

Is this plug and play?

Can I plug this hard drive to any PC and use without any software?. or can I use this without installing any software ? thanks
Asked by: Blakchole
I used this device successfully on a PC using Windows 10. To do this, with the computer powered down, I connected the device to a USB port and powered up the computer. To initialise the drive, I used the 'Disk Management' item from the Drop down menu from the 'Windows' icon on the bottom left hand corner of the Windows Desktop (Right Click on the icon to get the menu). the Dick Management item puts up a window which lists the disks visible at the bottom of the window. The new disk should be included in the list. If you are not sure, restart the system without the disk attached to see which disk has disappeared. The disk will need to be initialised by 'Disk Management' before it is useable by Windows 10. This is about as simple as it gets for installing a hard drive. If any of the above is unfamiliar to you, I suggest you get someone knowledgeable to do it on your behalf.

Is this compatible with an Xbox one ?

Asked by: Thesimpsons08
It will not be plug and play, you will likely need to format the hard drive to the FAT32 file system from NTFS as it will be out of the box, but after that it ought to work fine.
