Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. But HDTV is far from just one standard – it incorporates a couple of different resolutions, two different scanning modes, and a number of different frame rates. In this article, we present a guide to what all the terms actually mean.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good monitor; what a step up from a 24" 1080p 60hz screen. Finally replaced my old TN Panel ASUS which was 1080p to this and my god am I impressed. The resolution and refresh rate combined honestly is a game changer. I was trying to decide between this monitor and a 34" Ultrawide and after a couple of days researching and debating with myself I opted for the MSI mainly due to the fact Ultrawide is relatively unsupported and didn't want to come across any occasions where games/applications won't fully utilise all panel space. I would highly recommend this monitor however there are a couple of flaws that i've noticed. Although I won the dead pixel gamble and having a panel with 0 dead pixels there appears to be some screen flickering in games/applications when I've got FreeSync enabled which tends to lead me to disabling it which seems to solve the flickering for me. Having said that; I did notice the benefits of using FreeSync in certain games where my GPU wasn't quite beefy enough to handle high graphics and 144hz (Looking at you Dying Light) as it kept the game running nicely due to the adaptive sync. For those interested my build is; i7 4770k; 16GB DDR3 and a 1070ti I would suggest perhaps a 1080 or above would be more suited to a consistent 1440p 144hz monitor. The build quality is good; the stand is sturdy and real nice; vibrant colours; 144hz is amazing. Also very easy to VESA mount. Thankfully a display port cable is included in the box as I didn't even think to buy one. Would happily purchase another MSI product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you want 1440p @ 144Hz, buy this monitor. I spent about 1 week researching 1440p 144Hz monitors, and while there are a few stand-out favourites among popular reviewers, those models are usually very hard to get a hold of in the UK, and are also a bit more pricey. Eventually I came across this monitor, and while I hadn't originally considered MSI monitors, I thoroughly enjoyed the aesthetics of this one, and it came with all the features I wanted too! In short, this does everything it says it can, and it does them well. -1440p is crisp and clear as you'd expect. -144Hz is smooth with no visible ghosting or other artifacting you may see on cheaper panels. This is true 144Hz done well. -The VA panel (in my opinion) is the superior option for many including myself. Colours are good, although not as good as most IPS panels. Contrast is pretty good too. The backlight doesn't bleed the way IPS panels tend to do, so if you're gaming in a dark room or watching films on this monitor, your immersion shouldn't be ruined by any unruly backlight. The side and top bezels are nice and narrow, while the bottom is a bit thicker. This gives the monitor a pretty modern minimalist look that I really like. Finally, the curve. I wasn't looking for a curved monitor, but after finding that this monitor met all my requirements AND was actually in stock in the UK, I felt that the curve was worth giving a go. The curve is absolutely great for immersive gaming. Gaming on my secondary flat monitor, it just feels inferior to gaming on this curved beauty. The build quality of this monitor is excellent. The stand is incredibly sturdy and offers a solid adjustable range of motion. The stand also doesn't protrude too far outward, so doesn't take up more space on my desk than it really needs to. I spent £400 on this, and I'm glad I decided to spend as much because this is a monitor I know I'll still be using in 5 years with no desire to upgrade. Sorry Scan, I will say that this is listed for £350 on other sites, however Scan were the only store with it in stock and I am happy to give Scan my business. If you want a monitor that will last you many years to come, this is an excellent choice, and definitely one of the best at its price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great gaming monitor Love the 144Hz and the 2K resolution really made a difference to all my games. The colours are very vibrant too considering its a VA panel. Very pleased

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The monitor I had been looking for! This is the first 1440p monitor I have used, and the first 144Hz monitor I've used. There is a very noticeable difference from 1080p and 60Hz. The image quality is fantastic, and the screen has great viewing angles. So far I have had zero issues with ghosting or screen tearing, and the monitor just feels smooth. The curve took some time to get used to, but now I prefer it. While the headset stand is not an important feature, it's incredibly useful, especially since I had nowhere to put my headset before. The Freesync function works great, games look amazing and run incredibly smooth. The MSI OSD software works great, easy to change your monitor settings without using the circle button on the back of the monitor. It comes with a great stand, but can be Vesa mounted too if you wish to do that. Overall this monitor has everything I was looking for and is working great.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dead pixel Arrived with a dead pixel - scan says 1 pixel doesn't warrant a replacement, so if you don't mind getting a display with dead pixels scan is your best bet, don't want dead pixels, like I didn't? Take your money elsewhere and have peace of mind.
