PC monitor manufacturers tend to focus on a particular buzzword or acronym almost every year. In the past, we have been treated to HD (high definition), denoting the screen is capable of running a minimum 720p resolution.

Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great panel Upgraded from a 1080p TN monitor so huge difference! Easy to use settings though colours did need a bit of fiddling out the box to be what I wanted. Most preset game colours are useless however! Expensive monitor but very good overall

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best monitor I have ever used I love this thing, I didn't realise just how bad my other monitors were till I turned this on. It is the first time I have ever had to turn the brightness settings down significantly, up at the same level as my other monitors it was blinding to look at! Also, it does come with an HDMI and Display Port cable in the box (I went and bought a DP cable as it isn't mentioned and when I rang up Scan said it didn't have one with it). Overall you can tell that the quality is great, and a lot of thought went into it. It has a really solid stand (projection out of the bottom is a bit gimicky but a bit of 'fun' on a product isn't a bad thing - you can turn it off if you don't like it). Gaming on this is a thing of beauty (I suspect the graphics card helps as well :D) just go in and wack all the graphic settings to max and enjoy amazing detail and vistas. Negatives - changing input is quite clunky, which is made worse by the button placement being on the back (I also have 3 monitors side by side so either I have to reach awkwardly under or move the monitors out of alignment). I have a gaming rig and work laptop so not the end of the world as I normally only change it int he morning for work then in the evening if I'm playing. But to change it requires pressing the menu button, navigating down to input, across, up to desired input then selecting it. You do get used to it but still, frustrating. Other frustrating element is mounting it on an standard monitor arm plate requires a specific adaptor and it is such a pig to get to the mount points I gave up as I wanted to get it up and do some gaming on it and I don't have the adaptor yet so wan't any benefit to persevering at that point as I would have to put it back together anyway. On that note, I cannot even find the adaptor for sale anywhere either. If I do find it I will update this if I can or add another review with details. I know I have written more for negative than positive, but it was more wanting to make sure anyone makes an informed choice, it's a lot of money but overall I am happy to have bought it, so much so that I would happily buy this again or maybe even the 4k one if I had an extra £200. I would also happily buy another 2 to replace my monitors on either side. I'm not sure I can get this authorised by my wife though :D
