Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Reviews
27" ASUS BE27AQLB WQHD Monitor, IPS, 2560x1440, 5ms, 350cd/m², Speakers, DP/mDP/HDMI/DVI-D DL is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good connectivity stunning colour screen resolution stand adjustment The service I received from Scan was exceptional, I ordered late Friday afternoon and the Asus 27 inch BE27AQLB monitor arrived within 24 hours, I paid a small premium for Saturday delivery. First impressions were very good. I was able to use my Geforce GT630 graphics card, which has a DVI-I output, into the Asus Dual-Link DVI-D connector. I did not want to use the HDMI connector on my GT630 because it is an early spec. The DVI-D connector saved me the expense of having to purchase a new graphics card with a Display Port connector. Resolution at 2560x1440 is outstanding, with big screen area, as is the vibrancy of the colours. The menu system, accessed via the buttons on the front of the bezel, is very good. Pre-sets for different screen settings are handy for different modes. The use of an IPS (In-Plane Switching) LCD type panel has pros and cons. IPS advantages over the generally cheaper TN type panels include colour reproduction and good viewing angle, the response time of 5ms may not suit some gamers but is more than adequate for general use. There is a downside to IPS panels, not just from Asus, in that they may show Back-light Bleed (BLB). This is where the LCD screen does not completely block light from behind thus allowing patches of light to be visible, mainly around the edges or corners. In my opinion the severity of BLB on an IPS panel is a variable and a matter of luck, from whichever manufacturer of low to mid-range IPS monitors, pay much more and it may be less of an issue. I noticed, on my new Asus, BLB along the top edge and bottom right corner. This was with the screen showing total black but not enough to warrant return. The brightness level when shipped was 100%, using the Windows 7 monitor set-up facility, I was able to reduce brightness to a more acceptable level, which reduced BLB. A dead pixel test showed there are no dead pixels. Research on the internet revealed many examples of BLB, from a range of manufacturers in the low to mid-range, with monitor edge construction seeming to play a part in BLB severity. Having accepted minor BLB which in normal use is not noticeable, I am very pleased with my purchase and the benefits the Asus brings. To summarise, great resolution, brilliant colours, screen menu, connectivity and stand adjustment out-weigh minor BLB. One last point, the loud speakers, speech is fine but not music.
