Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

As you’ll all likely know by now, DVI is the current standard for connection of a PC or other display generator to a digital display output. You’ll recognise the multi-pin connector and know that almost all modern LCD displays have the corresponding input connector, for feeding from your PC. But do you know how DVI works? This TekSpek seeks to teach you how.

Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. But HDTV is far from just one standard – it incorporates a couple of different resolutions, two different scanning modes, and a number of different frame rates. In this article, we present a guide to what all the terms actually mean.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow Amazing quality! It isn't well calibrated out of the box (a bit bright), but it only took 5 minutes to calibrate it correctly by following an online guide. Simply stunning visuals playing games @ 165hz!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1440p ISP FTW! Im so glad when i upgraded from a 1080p home tv system. Made the mistake of purchasing a tv instead of a pc monitor. Colour is great, now and again i do get lines. Easy fix, just turn it off and on again. Rarely happens, no issues with dead pixels. Does shake a bit if you game like a mad man but those years are past me. The stand is metal, does not move out of place. Has a wast amount of setting so you can adjust it to your liking, overclocking mode too! and gamer mode. Cant wait for the next installing for the predator series, hoping to purchase another.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product, quality build The picture quality is great. Altering the contrast and such in the monitor menus and Nvidia control panel, I didn't notice any unexpected change in image quality, the picture stays consistent. The glow and tint are pretty weak and I can't see any backlight bleed. The colours are vivid and the whites are nice and bright. Raising the contrast too much will merge grays and whites, so I only raised that a little and instead raised digital vibrance in the Nvidia control panel much more. When it comes to viewing angles, they are very good, text and images stay as clear as possible and there is still plenty of brightness. The colour temp options a nice, Warm provides a yellower image, whereas Cool results in a more balanced image. I suggest avoiding "Blue Light" as it's too yellow (kind of confusing). Both 144Hz and 165Hz provide relatively little ghosting. Without software, I couldn't tell any difference. Moving my cursor on a black background, the time for pixels to change was very apparent along with splashing of the cursor white (although this is not general usage). Being unfamiliar with IPS monitors, this may be normal. In regards to the OD feature, changing between the settings makes a world of difference. Having it off results in a very blurred picture, whereas Extreme provides great clarity. G-sync mode works fine, good for games where you don't have very high framerates. The built-in speakers are very poor, but for the sake of it, the audio is clear enough and loud enough if my headphones break. Personally, I'm not a fan of the buttons on the monitor, they're annoying to press. None of the buttons are loose, the menus themselves are good and work fine. My other main criticism involves the red in the design, it will clash with people's themes. Plus I think the Predator logo looks lame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent picture quality, solidly built My previous monitor was a 4-5 year old, low-mid range. So it was no doubt going to be a step up. Taking that into consideration, the picture quality is still excellent. Plenty of settings to adjust it to your liking also. It's hard to notice any darkening of the screen, only slightly in a dark room. The viewing angle is great and the stand is solid and very adjustable. You can raise to quite a height and angle it all sorts, even flip it portrait. The high refresh rate is really underrated. It makes the game a lot more immersive. Characters talking to you seem life like. Overall a great product. My only complaint, and its a minor one, are the buttons. They have no feel and stodgy. Though buttons are not a major part and so still very happy with product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Monitor Best overall monitor I've bought, previously owning lower resolution monitor my view may be a bit biased, but I really think this screen goes well with my med-high range set up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product Very good monitor. Luckily mine has insignificant BLB. Only downside is the buttons are a pain, but once u have ur settings done u rarely use them again. Also assembling the monitor took some time to figure out.

Contrast

Hello, I've read on some reviews of this panel that the contrast is only 1000:1, but it shows 100,000,000:1 on the description here? Just want to double check before I decide to buy or not as have read that the blacks can appear washed out and greyish...
Asked by: MallicXIII
I can't comment on the numbers as I can't remember off the top of my head. What I can say is that I haven't experienced "washed out" blacks with this screen. I switched from a TN panel (which are known for "washed out" images) - so it's possible I might not be as sensitive to it as other previous IPS owners. But for me, Witcher 3 for example was a real treat. Really deep blacks and vibrant colours. You just have to set it up correctly (there are a few videos on Youtube which helped me with this).

Warranty

Why is Scan the only company to offer these premium priced monitors, with only a 1 year warranty, when everywhere else (including the manufacture) states a 2 year warranty? This is the one thing that puts me off buying it here. 1 year warranty is ridiculous for a premium panel.
Asked by: Shane82
Hello, The warranty on these monitors is covered by Acer and is a 24 month warranty. Regards,

Does this monitor have a screen coating (ex:anti-glare)

I would like to know whether this monitor has any screen coating. Is the panel glossy?
Asked by: petapacket
It has a matte finish. Not shiny at all. Works fine when its sunny. Still get a great picture with the matte finish.
