Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD

256GB Samsung 850 PRO SSD

3D V-NAND Flash Memory

Samsung's unique and innovative 3D V-NAND flash memory architecture is a breakthrough in overcoming the density limitations, performance and endurance of today's conventional planar NAND architecture. 3D V-NAND stacks 32 cell layers vertically over one another rather than decreasing cell dimensions and trying to fit itself onto a fixed horizontal space. As a result, the technology provides higher density and better performance utilizing a smaller footprint. The NAND flash memory delivers the ultimate in read and write performance in both sequential and random aspects. This is especially impressive in the 256GB model that outperforms similar models on the market by more than 80 MB/s in write speed.

SAMSUNG 850 EVO - RAPID MODE

Rapid Mode

Maximise Your Everyday Computing

On the full range of the 850 PRO you can ramp up the read / write performance using the RAPID MODE. Magician software lets you enhance the performance by processing data on a system level using free PC memory (DRAM) as a cache, providing 1.8x faster performance in the RAPID MODE.

850 EVO FEATURES

Improved Energy Efficiency

Compute Longer with Improved Energy Efficiency

The 850 PRO allows you to work more productively and work harder due to the very efficient, power management components, the 850 PRO 256GB SSD boasts the lowest power consumption of any SSD in full use due to it expending less energy while it maintains market-leading performance. In addition the 850 PRO SSD has LPDDR2 cache memory which provides higher performance while using 30% less power when active and 93% less power when idle than the typical DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

Secure Data - AES 256 Encryption

Secure Valuable Data Using AES 256 Encryption

The 850 PRO SSD protects your PC’s hardware and personal data, the drive includes AES-256-bit hardware-based, full disk encryption engine that secures your data without performance being compromised, that is often the case with software-based encryption. The advanced security in the 850 PRO complies with the TCG™ opal v2.0 standards, protectiong PSID and is also compatible with the Microsoft eDrive IEEE 1667 protocol. Also, you can use the crypto erase service to erase or initialise data.

10 Year Warranty

Guaranteed Endurance and Reliability

The Samsung 850 PRO SSD has twice the endurance of the previous 840 PRO and will keep working as long as you do. Samsung’s V-NAND Technology is built to handle 300 Terabytes Written (TBW) which equates to a 40 GB daily read/write workload over a 10- year period. Plus, it comes with the industry’s top-level limited warranty.

Dynamic Thermal Guard

Protected from Overheating - Dynamic Thermal Guard

Dynamic Thermal Guard protection is included on all 850 PRO SSD’s, it keeps your PC performance safe from overheating, and also monitors and maintains the drive’s optimal operating temperature with a throttle feature that automatically drops the SSD’s temperature where it is necessary to protect your data and ensure the responsiveness you expect.

Installation

Level up to the 850 EVO simply without any hassle

Using its One Stop Install Navigator Software, you can migrate all the data and applications from your SSD or HDD to the 850 PRO quickly and easily. The Auto Install guide navigates through the simple three-step process. Plus, you can conveniently monitor, manage and maintain your 850 PRO with the Samsung Magician Software, it features tools to help you maximize performance, including benchmarking, advanced OS optimization, disk health status tracking & over-provisioning (OP) settings.

Top-Quality Components

In-house solution consisting of top-quality components

Because Samsung has intimate knowledge of every component and its parts, it can fine-tune them at each stage of development to ensure they work together beautifully. The result - enhanced performance, lower power consumption with an up to 1 GB LPDDR2 DRAM cache memory and improved energy-efficiency with the 3-core MEX controller.

Reviews
Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fast and quiet I am delighted with this SSD that is fast and quiet. Would recommend as a replacement for a hard drive. 03 May 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Well reviewed drive Fast drive with good software for upgrading from an older drive. The instructions tell you to connect the new drive using a SATA-to-USB adaptor (not supplied!), but for a desktop you can ignore that and just wire the drive inside the case. The data migration software worked like a charm, copying data from nearly full 128Gb SSD to this new 256Gb Samsung. Booted from the new drive without any problems - just needed to change the boot drive in the BIOS. 11 March 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wow that's fast! A very fast SSD at a great price. This replaced a smaller ocz SSD which was 4 years old and the speed is noticeably better. 29 February 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Superb SSD Very good fast SSD with an enviable reputation. Migrating a working Windows installation from the old SSD to this one was seamless with the included Samsung data migration software. You will need a USB to SATA adapter lead to achieve this which is NOT included with the drive. 16 February 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great, Fast SSD! Amazing. I can't believe I was enduring those boot up times with my old HDD. This SSD boots my PC in about 5 seconds. With this SSD, I also installed Windows 10 in about 10-15 minutes. The cooldown period that I got with my old HDD after booting up, before I could actually effectively use my programs, is also gone. The PC is ready to go as soon as the desktop is visible. Load times of games have also vastly improved and so has the installation of software. It is a little on the high side price wise and there are other, cheaper models available. In terms of performance though, it is worth the price. If you do have a HDD, I definately recommend and SSD. Scan were the same as they always are, great service and a super quick delivery. 08 November 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by No Issues As expected. Delivery was fine as always from Scan. Nothing to comment except value but that's me not you. 21 October 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by SIMPLY THE BEST (BETTER THAN ALL THE REST BY A LONG WAY) I brought this to replace a standard hard drive in my mothers laptop which had failed permanently and I am so please with the results and so is she. Her laptop now boots up in in half the time than it previously did (From pressing the power button to full desktop loaded in under 20 seconds). It is super reliable and well worth every penny spent on. These might cost a little bit more than other brands and model but the extra money is well worth spending to get a SSD this great in fact I am now considering replacing the hard drive in my own laptop with a bigger model of this type (the 1 or 2GB model) in the new year because I am jealous of the speed and performance she now has. 15 August 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by great drive Excellent ssd can't notice a huge difference from the 840 to the 850 untill you do a bench mark Boot to win 8.1 in 6 seconds 29 April 2015

Answer:
Yes, you do need an adapter. I didn't know that so my SSD was mounted with 4 straps.
Then I bought akasa ssd adapter which scan is not selling anymore, but from what I see this will do just fine, and you don't really need anything expensive at all.

Answer:
Depends on your PC case. If you have a pre built PC or an old PC I would probably say yes. However, if you have a custom PC with an advanced case I would check the standard 3.5" bays for 2.5" screw holes.

I thought I needed one but my custom PC case had the screw holes in the 3.5" trays.

Answer:
You could use an adapter to secure the SSD but it is so light and small you could equally leave it loose in the case resting on something or use some Velcro to secure it. Scan sell suitable drive bay brackets.

Answer:
This depends on your drive bays, not the SSD. The drive has standard mountings for a 2.5-inch drive. My case has dual-purpose drive bays which can take both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives so I did not need an adapter.

Answer:
No, not included. You need to buy a USB to SATA if you want to migrate your Windows installation from an existing drive to this one. For connection inside the PC you will need a SATA cable and spare power connection (usually already there).
