Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

G-SYNC works in a surprisingly simple way - it calculates how long the present frame takes to compute and then, crucially, varies the refresh rate of the monitor to match. It works between a minimum of 33.3ms (30fps) and the maximum supported refresh of the display. The key takeaway here is that the graphics card and monitor are both synced up to one another - the monitor doesn't have the limitations imposed by a rigid, fixed-rate scanning routine.

Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. But HDTV is far from just one standard – it incorporates a couple of different resolutions, two different scanning modes, and a number of different frame rates. In this article, we present a guide to what all the terms actually mean.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

24" Acer G246HLBbid Monitor, 1920x1080, 2ms, 250cd/m², D-Sub/DVI/HDMI, Black is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great value screen. This screen was purchased to view security cameras. It has proved to be excellent so far, a reasonably priced monitor with very clear reproduction of the cameras. I would heartily recommend it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from All the other reviews on the web said this monitor was great, so I assumed it was.. Everything about this monitor, on the face of it, is great. It looks decent, fits together well, good ports on the back for HDMI, DVI and D-Sub. Shame I went ahead and bought it and the ghosting is absolutely terrible. I guess mine is just a bad panel (and if this is the case I'll change/delete this review) but deary me the image ghosting is unbelievable. With anything moving on a light background on the screen, there is a terrible, TERRIBLE ghosting effect. It's so bad it's almost like it was photoshopped in. (See pics) If Scan refund me/send me a new panel and it's fine, I'm sure this monitor would be 5/5. Shame the ghosting is god-awful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent buy This is - for the money - pretty much an unbeatable monitor. I'm very impressed with it: for the money, you wonder how Acer can produce something of this quality. Rock solid image, no duff pixels, display is slightly dark for my tastes (but that's easily rectified.) The buttons do seem slightly flimsy, but you'll frankly hardly ever use them. Recommended, and I might actually buy a second one shortly for an extended desktop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb monitor at an excellent price point I bought two of these to replace my aging 22" LCDs which have been part of my set up since 2005. Going from 2x1600x1200 #ie. 3200x1200# to 2x1920x1080 #3840x1080# took a little adjusting, not least I have to create some new wallpapers to fully pan the two screens. The Acer is an good solid monitor. The packaging is neat and well thoughtout, which means the monitors arrived in good shape. While the units were comparatively light, the build quality appears good and they do not feel flimsy nor 'cheap'. Assembly and attachment of the stand was simple and straight forward. I was a little suspecious of the stability offered by the base, given its relative small size, but it provides a good firm platform from which the monitor stands one. Connectivity is superb: D-sub, DVI-I and HDMI should be enough for most enthusiasts. The on-screen menu is limited but does the job. For those just want their monitors to work without much fiddling, this is ideal. There are some presets and user settings available, should you prefer brightness, contrast and color temperature of your own choosing. There are no dead pixel on inspection. The panels produce a crisp and sharp image. The color is strong saturation, without bleeding. There are some comments on the internet regarding ghosting, but I have not noticeed such effect. So far I have use the monitors for the following tasks: internet browsing, watch video streams, reading and editing text, watching DVD/DivX movies and playing games #Civ IV and X3TC#. The monitors have performed well on each of these tasks. I have three complains which, on the balance of things, are relatively minor, but would explain why the quality rating is 4 stars rather than 5: 1) The monitor only comes with a D-sub cable. Given that there is DVI-I as well as HDMI connectivity, this is a little inconsiderate. In this day and age, I would imagine a DVI cable should be standard. 2) The connectors on the back of the panel are at 90 degrees to the panel, which means cables will be sticking out of the back rather than down. This may be an issue for those who have limited clearance from the wall. 3) The on/off and OSD buttons appear to be a little flimsy. They are actually not bad, given I do not intend to change my monitor settings on a regular basis. Yes, there are montiors out there with more features, with better specs on paper, with more 'technologies', but frankly, I prefer a good solid performer rather than paying for the 'bling'. All in all, I would recommend this monitor to anyone without hesitation.
