Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

G-SYNC works in a surprisingly simple way - it calculates how long the present frame takes to compute and then, crucially, varies the refresh rate of the monitor to match. It works between a minimum of 33.3ms (30fps) and the maximum supported refresh of the display. The key takeaway here is that the graphics card and monitor are both synced up to one another - the monitor doesn't have the limitations imposed by a rigid, fixed-rate scanning routine.

Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. But HDTV is far from just one standard – it incorporates a couple of different resolutions, two different scanning modes, and a number of different frame rates. In this article, we present a guide to what all the terms actually mean.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

23.8" Dell P2414H Monitor, IPS Panel, 1920x1080, 8ms, 250cd/m², D-Sub/DP/DVI, Black/ Silver is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from H'mm? I'm a video editor and needed to update my Dell monitor which has been fantastic, and is the main reason I went for Dell again. Out of the box the monitor is lighter than my previous Dell but looks good and importantly has a great stand which is fully adjustable and not wobbly. After connecting up via DVI none of the colour pre-sets were right on my Mac Pro. "Standard" was very red and the other pre-sets seemed very out of whack. I settled for "custom" and reduced the red by 2% and then spent 2 days with the Mac monitor calibration utility to finally get the monitor colours to match my calibrated video monitor. I connected a second Mac Pro via the VGA port and it is terrible. Screen flicker and Moire makes it unusable. However, 2 MP's connected via DP and DVI and all is now sweet. For the price of this monitor I would expect it to be correct out of the box. As to why they put a VGA port on this monitor is beyond me, perhaps to make the numbers up. That being said, the monitor is OK but beware if you are not competent to calibrate it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb 24" monitor I got this to use with a MacBook and it has met all expectations. I am using a miniDisplay port to full size display port cable to drive it without an issues and also have a PC hooked up to the VGA at the same time. I can switch between the 2. I did initially drive it from a miniDP to a VGA cable but I got some enactable flickering on some fonts. A direct DP cable is the way to go. Placing this next to a 2 year old 21" iMac was a revelation. I prefer the Dell. Monitor was packaged and delivered on time. Great service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Incredible IPS monitor A great monitor with minimal light bleed (A common issue that effects a lot of IPS displays). Gaming wise I've noticed little to no ghosting and excellent quality when watching movies :) Would highly recommend!
