Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

NVIDIA G-Sync
NVIDIA G-Sync
Date Issued: 17th Dec 2013

G-SYNC works in a surprisingly simple way - it calculates how long the present frame takes to compute and then, crucially, varies the refresh rate of the monitor to match. It works between a minimum of 33.3ms (30fps) and the maximum supported refresh of the display. The key takeaway here is that the graphics card and monitor are both synced up to one another - the monitor doesn't have the limitations imposed by a rigid, fixed-rate scanning routine.

23.6" MSI Optix MAG241CP Curved Gaming Monitor, VA, 1920x1080, 1ms, 144Hz, AMD FreeSync, 100M:1, 300cd/m², HDMI/DP is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product is very good, happy with purchase. Woohoo, where do we start with this one? This was a fantastic product to recieve and especially for a budget gamer, it is a great monitor. The 144hz FreeSync monitor is amazing for gaming and you can especially see the difference between 60hz and 144hz. A curved monitor for that cheap? I couldn't believe my eyes, my hands were already twitching for the buy button. I love this monitor so much, and it is a fantastic monitor for a budget setup or for a 3 monitor combo. The curved screen gives a very nice view into the games that you are in, they feel as though you're getting sucked in. The colours are very good, a wide colour range with fantastic colours on the screen. The Full HD especially shows when you are playing games. I can't express my love for this budget monitor. You should definately buy this monitor if you are on a budget and want to improve your setup massively. The materials don't feel cheap, the stand was very easy to assemble. All you need was a screwdriver. Then just plug and play, it is a fantastic monitor and a great present for a gamer. The 3 year warranty that you get with the monitor is life saving, you can even get 3 more months if you complete a survey once you sign up your product.

Questions & Answers

Compatability with the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060

Hi Scan, we have built a custom gaming PC with an GeoForce 1060 Card in it but notice that all the monitors built for G-Sync are twice the price of the ones with FreeSync. I've noticed that also some of the cheaper monitors scale back other functionality in order to achieve the 144 hz. At the moment we are using a bog standard 60hz Dell so I suppose any monitor would be an improvement but wanted to ask if this MSI Optix MAG241CP would be OK to use with a 1060 GeoForce Card or would there be an incompatibility. Also if this monitor isn't suitable could you let me know if there are any sub £200 monitors that would work well with this card we could look at as alternatives. Thanks Roger
