Display Panel Types
Display Panel Types

Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

NVIDIA G-Sync
NVIDIA G-Sync
Date Issued: 17th Dec 2013

G-SYNC works in a surprisingly simple way - it calculates how long the present frame takes to compute and then, crucially, varies the refresh rate of the monitor to match. It works between a minimum of 33.3ms (30fps) and the maximum supported refresh of the display. The key takeaway here is that the graphics card and monitor are both synced up to one another - the monitor doesn't have the limitations imposed by a rigid, fixed-rate scanning routine.

As you’ll all likely know by now, DVI is the current standard for connection of a PC or other display generator to a digital display output. You’ll recognise the multi-pin connector and know that almost all modern LCD displays have the corresponding input connector, for feeding from your PC. But do you know how DVI works? This TekSpek seeks to teach you how.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent product with everything I needed The product was delivered quickly and well packaged 27 December 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product, exactly as expected Great monitor for the price, no problems with set up. 10 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by good for money great monitor games look much better than on old one viewing angle not a problem as i sit in front of it to play games! 15 June 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Great value, but a TN panel Pros: - Good quality on the plastic parts - Low price - DVI cable included Cons: - Wobbly on its stand, to use the buttons to adjust details you need to counter the pushing at the top of the screen, with your other hand - Terrible view angles (TN Panel) - Too bright backlight with no option to dim it down (the blacks are too bright at any brightness setting) - Eco mode does not reduce backlight to a specific value, and instead functions similar to Dynamic Contrast - Gamma values / Saturation wrong on all of the presets except sRGB My suggestion: spend an extra £20 to get a monitor based on VA panel technology and you will enjoy the view angles, as well as the deeper blacks (and less eye fatigue due to the bright backlights) much more. 09 June 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very good budget screen It's a fantastic screen would recommend it to anyone. Only downside is as a few people have pointed out, the viewing angle can be a little restricted but for the most part it's a non issue and can be overcome by playing around with some of the settings and switching the Smatrview setting off. 18 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good image, well designed, seems tough Good looking screen with good image. Not reflection that i have noticed as of yet. Was a bit of a pain to adjust the image to get it to how i wanted but now its there im very happy. 16 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good size and picture quality Very happy with this product. Delivery was very prompt too. 07 April 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Cheap, good quality but with poor viewing angles I decided I'd just go for a cheap monitor as I frequently find myself quite happy with hardware that doesn't sport all the bells and whistles we're told we should want. This seemed well priced so I went for it. In hindsight I'd overlooked one area that this monitor really struggles and that's the viewing angles. The brightness, contrast, colours, build quality and response time all feel fine but I'm quite gutted by the very limited viewing angle. It's ok horizontally but the vertical fade is terrible. I have to position it at a very particular, raised height to prevent a fade in contrast down the screen and just shifting my posture a little upsets that. That can only really be avoided by sitting much further away but that's not really comfortable. At the end of the day, it's what I get for cutting corners or failing to do my research. I'm quite happy that I got what I asked for and the Scan service was perfectly reliable and fair. In future I'll simply pay more attention to viewing angles (or even display types) and probably spend a little more. 13 March 2014
