Display Panel Types
Display Panel Types

Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

G-SYNC works in a surprisingly simple way - it calculates how long the present frame takes to compute and then, crucially, varies the refresh rate of the monitor to match. It works between a minimum of 33.3ms (30fps) and the maximum supported refresh of the display. The key takeaway here is that the graphics card and monitor are both synced up to one another - the monitor doesn't have the limitations imposed by a rigid, fixed-rate scanning routine.

Modern desktop computers and notebooks comprise of a CPU, motherboard, graphics, storage, and, usually an optical drive. Now shipping with all but the cheapest complete PCs are LCD monitors. Advances in display manufacturing and associated cost reductions with economies of scale have brought LCD monitors into the mainstream, shipping with budget systems that start at just £400. LCD monitors come in all shapes and sizes, have differing resolutions and inputs. The purpose of this TekSpek is to provide a basic understanding of how LCDs work, delineate their desirable features, and to offer basic buying advice.

As you’ll all likely know by now, DVI is the current standard for connection of a PC or other display generator to a digital display output. You’ll recognise the multi-pin connector and know that almost all modern LCD displays have the corresponding input connector, for feeding from your PC. But do you know how DVI works? This TekSpek seeks to teach you how.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

21.5" Acer KA220HQ Monitor HDMI/DVI/VGA 5ms 1920x1080 Black, 100000000:1 is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good budget displays Purchased 4 of these displays for multi monitor office set up all work well. Good quality for a good price and all that is needed in office. Delivery as always on time and hassle free.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Display quality is very disappointing. I bought this monitor as a replacement for my old Acer P223W 16:10 monitor which died unexpectedly on me after many years service. My budget was tight and this one seemed to review favourably so I thought I would give it a chance. Unfortunately this new monitor can't even compete on the display quality front with my old one, colours are horribly washed out and don't expect to achieve anything close to a true black... the best you'll manage is a murky light grey. Even after attempting to calibrate the monitor it is very difficult to improve on this in any significant way, so I definitely wouldn't recommend buying if you're planning on doing any serious photo editing, video work or gaming (Doom 2016 for instance has a lot of dark areas and looks like a washed out mess on this monitor). In short, it's just fine if all you plan on doing is some web browsing, checking your email or light office work but don't expect anything more than that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good monitor - great picture I purchased two of these monitors to replace a dual screen set up and also provide a monitor for my son at Christmas. They are well packaged, easy to set up and provide a really great picture. The only downside to this monitor is the fixed stem. If you need a monitor with height adjustment, then this isn't the one for you. We were fine with the fixed stand so it is pretty much perfect for us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality Monitor This is a great quality monitor at a cheap price. It only comes with VGA & power cables instead of a DVI cable, but this is the only downside. The picture quality is good & the setup is very easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! Brilliant monitor for the price, works perfectly, no problems what so ever, clear and perfect for gaming in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent monitor, great picture! I am currently using this monitor as my second monitor. I use it to watch documentaries and Netflix while playing games on my main monitor, it works like a charm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Monitor!! I recently bought this a couple of days ago and its perfect, I am currently using it as a second monitor but it is still amazing as a main monitor, Also the title is misleading because the monitor actually supports HDMI/VGA/DVI Consclusion : Great Quality but a few minor cons such as stand is a little unstable but works fine.
