Rated 5 out of 5 by 1 TB Red WD NAS. Since fitting they have sat in my Storage unit working away. je ne sais quoi. 09 March 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by 1TB internal haddisk installed and has worked well so far... Its a 1TB internal hard disk and it works! It matches another of the same type that is about 6 months or so old in a NAS box in a mirror configuration. The drive installed easily in the NAS box with the (NAS box) provided cradle and screws, was detected by the NAS box software as available and was easily added to the existing volume as a mirror drive. It has worked without fault so far (a couple of weeks) - I would expect the same of _any_ hard disk however. 19 March 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by great value nas discs Bought a pair of these as one of my NAS discs failed so expanded at the same time 30 November 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Highly recommended for NAS systems SCAN exhibits the usual high level of Customer Service, delivery process, price competitivness and P&P. However can't comment on the product yet as it's part of a new build not yet completed. 26 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by I always use WD HDDs as I think the quality of build and after sales is excellent. Two disks purchased for NAS; Raid 1, working perfectly no problems. As ever very good build quality from WD. 22 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by NAS HD Great value and much faster than the previous disk it replaced. Just goes ahead and works as required! 19 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect for my Drobo 5N Does everything I ask of it. The Drobo needs a good quality disk and this meets the criteria. 15 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great in Synology DS211J Bought a pair of these to replace some ageing Samsung Spinpoint disks in a Synology DS211J, one of which was having SMART errors and starting to stutter a bit... Haven't really used WD much before but these RED disks are extremely quiet and seem to run cooler so the system fan works less (if at all, in fact). I can now leave my NAS running full time nearby without being disturbed by the disks or the fan. I can well believe that these drives are optimised for NAS use. I found them a worthwhile upgrade and the delivery service from Scan was great as usual. 29 January 2014

Answer:
With NAS you should use similar size disks if you are intending to utilise RAID. If not and you are in JBOD mode then I don't think it matters.

With RAID data is replicated over disks and so they should be the same size, although not necessarily the same make ! You may be able to use different sizes in a RAID configuration but not all of the available space will be utilised.

Answer:
Yes but not advisable. NAS systems invariably use RAID 5 which requires data to be allocated to more than one disk, for faster read/writes. HDD's become less efficient as they fill up, say 50%, and so the smallest disk would start to impact on the combined read/write times.

Answer:
If you want to configure the NAS with multiple drives in RAID they would have to be the same drive.

Answer:
It depends how you want to configure the drives - i.e. some RAID configurations are simpler if identical sizes.
