14" Gigabyte Aero 14-W-CF1, Core i7 6700HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD, 3GB GeForce GTX 970M, USB 3.0 Type C, Win 10 Pro is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall a great machine more people should know about. Gigabyte deserve a lot of praise for it. Overall a great machine. Gigabyte deserve a lot of praise for it. I use this machine extensively every day since July 2016. Pros: - fairly light and small - fantastic matt screen - good battery life - very quiet machine that doesn't get warm or noisy unless under full strain - very impressive performance when needed (e.g. GPU rendering) - hard drive read speed (start up time is fastest I've ever experienced) - Nice finish inside. Great smooth black finish around the key board. Looks pretty elegant (which I find important when putting the laptop in front of a client) - it seems like it will be easy to get to the fans, should they require cleaning in the future - lit keyboard Cons: - hard drive write speed seems to be significantly slower than read speed - not so great finish outside (I personally don't like the faux carbon texture. A plain, sturdier (!) black lid with the same black finish used around the keyboard would have been nicer. The machine offers such a great performance that it could easily be a Macbook Pro replacement, if it looked a bit better from outside. The lid is not robust enough for my taste, so it has to be handled with a lot of care. Mine already has a small dent. (Can the cover be replaced?) - cranked power plug and adjacent bulky noise filter need improvement

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good all-rounder that is not heavy and has great battery life. I don't like: * Most of the laptop is plastic, it doesn't feel cheap, but I fear for the longevity. * The screen is not coated with anything scratch-proof (I know this is unusual because it is not a touch screen, but if you travel a lot, you will eventually damage the gorgeous display). * The rubber feet risers are functional, but seem very special, if you lose them, I think it will be very difficult to replace. * Gigabyte software that is included: ** The software works, you can update drivers and adjust the fan speed for gaming and change power levels, but it (the gigabyte software) feels sluggish, clunky, gigabyte should hire more/better people. I like: * The screen: it is soo pretty, so crisp and accurate, fantastic viewing angles, no silly touchscreen. (also the screen opens fully flat, so the laptop looks like a massive tablet with a keyboard). * Speakers: surprisingly good, not terrible, actually very adequate for indoor usage. * Keyboard: feels premium and is a joy to type on. * I/O: I do not mind NOT having an ethernet port, because I got one of those ethernet dongles that is also a USB3 hub, I am yet to exceed the bandwidth. The IO is MODERN!! * Fans/vents/cooling: while the fans ARE noisy at full speed, they keep the laptop under control while playing games. The laptop has a enough well placed vents for air intake and air outtake. * Size: The laptop is comfortable to work on and is not too small or too massive, 14" is the sweetspot for laptops. * Battery: the most bestest battery life of any windows/pc laptop ever. * Performance: I run Linux virtual machines with many many docker containers, blender, many many games (rust, no mans land, elite dangerous, stellaris, factorio, rocket league), visual studio with unity (not at the same time). I am very, very impressed at how capable this laptop is, but blender cycles rendering is not as fast as I expected, but it's good enough. * Crapware: there is almost no crapware at all, the installed OS is so clean, top marks (boo Lenovo, Asus, Dell, HP). * Looks: The laptop is okay looking I suppose, once you take the stickers off, it just looks a bit black and simple. I am okay with that, I like simple, clean functional.

Questions & Answers

Confirm battery life?

Your site says 8 hours, Gigabyte UK and USA say 10 hours, any reason for the difference?
Asked by: ipcress
I can confirm 7-8 hours when using the machine for anything that doesn't strain the graphics card. I am using the laptop extensively every day since July 2016, and the battery life doesn't seem to have deteriorated. The onboard graphics cards is quite powerful, so I rarely use the dedicated card. When using the computer for more graphic intense tasks, it drops to about 5 hours. The great screen is almost too bright at 75%, so this helps battery life as well. Gigabyte deserve a lot of praise for this machine and more people should know about it. My feeling is that it can easily compete with the new high spec Macbook Pros at half the price tag.
