The modern PC is potentially a mass of heat output and heat production hot spots. With CPUs rated at more than 100W of heat output, single graphics boards carrying similar ratings (and people want to run two!), multiple hard drives the norm, lots of memory and mainboards covered in heatpipes to combat toasty core logic and PWM circuits, a PC appreciably warming up a room when it’s working hard is no joke.

Watercooling
Date Issued: 19th Jun 2008

Watercooling for the PC has been around for years in some form or another, for at least as long as Scan have been in business, with basic physics defining why you want to use it. That means for air cooling, to cope with increasing temperature in the heatsink you need to move the air across it faster. That is why thermostatically controlled fans in your PC will turn faster the hotter something gets.

Anybody who has been near their share of computer systems will appreciate that not all systems make the same amount of noise. There are a number of reasons for why this is so. Firstly, a computer makes noise for different reasons. Generally, anything mechanical is going to make noise.

120mm be quiet! Shadow Wings quiet fan, low speed 800rpm, noise @ 100% 9.8 dB(A) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll certainly Be Quiet! Corny, maybe - but true! This 'Shadow Wings' 120mm fan is the 'slow' version, turning at just 800 rpm, so it really is quiet!! It's not the PWM version, having only the 3-pin connection - so you'll not be connecting it directly to your motherboard if you want variable speeds! It comes with a 4-pin MOLEX Male - MOLEX Female connector that also provides a 7v feed for the fan. However, if you've a case which provides a 'speed control' then this is the version for you. It describes itself as a screwless fan, and there are 4 "rubber pins" that allow you to attach it to your case, keeping vibrational noise to an absolute minimum. So, if you want a quiet/silent fan for your case which just runs quietly - go get yours! You'll not hear anymore noise being made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb and silent Very pleased with these fans, got a few in various cases and they are so quiet you can't hear them at all. Very well made too. Impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inaudible, yet powerful. If you have any ambient noise in your room whatsoever, even just sounds from outside or around the house, the fans are completely and utterly inaudible. You can't hear a thing. The only time I can ever hear them is when I'm in an empty house, doing nothing, and with no other sounds occurring around me. To cap the utter silence off, my 4.7Ghz i5 never goes over 65 degrees even when subject to prime95 or Intel Burn Tests. Enjoy one of the best fans on the market.

Questions & Answers

do these fans come with screws? or are they compatible with normal sized fan screws?

Asked by: whip
No, it doesn't come with screws - but comes with 4 rubber pins which allow you to attach it to the case. Better than screws, IMHO. But, if screws are what you want/need to use, then this particular fan' is NOT going to be the right one for you. I'm sure there are others in the Be Quiet! range (the 'Silent Wings' range has been released since this generation of fans) and I believe some of those do have corners that can accept normal fan screws.

Will these fit onto an EK240 radiator? If not can you reccomend an alternative that will be as quiet?

Asked by: Andyb8
There should be no reason why the fans don't fit onto the radiator.
