Customer Reviews

17.3" 3XS MVW-20 Thunderbolt 4K is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent desktop replacement I configured this was quite high spec options in order to make a decently future-proof desktop replacement. I wasn't sure what compromises I would find over my desktop PC, but I'm pleased to say there are none; this laptop is better in every way than my last PC, which was itself no slouch! I bought my MVW-20 some months ago, so I've had plenty of time to evaluate it. I love it just as much as I did on day one. Despite the availability of gaming and audio workstation builds here at Scan, this seemed like the best option for me. I wanted a powerful machine for heavy audio sequencing work, a good GPU for games in my downtime, and a 4k screen for Ableton/Photoshop software (to allow for lots of breakout sub-windows, and to minimise the need for scrolling). I went for a i7700k, a 1TB 960 Evo SSD, a storage HDD and a GTX 1070. (NB - The option has changed since I bought it, and you have to take the GTX 1080 now.) Positives: Superfast for my creative software, and handles everything I throw at it easily. I can't stress enough what a joy it is for me to use this machine every day: to have so much power in such a small system. Lots of USB2/USB3 ports, and of course the Thunderbolt/USB-C too. This is my first 4k screen, and I love the options I have now to see more on the screen at once (compared to my 1440p monitor). I wasn't expecting to run games in 4k, but it's surprising how many can run very well in the native resolution with high settings. Now that the system sells with a 1080 only, it must be significantly more capable. When I do have to turn down the resolution to 1080p in order to stay above 60fps, I can almost always max out every setting. In-built speaker is decently loud, even with the lid closed. Negatives: The only real downside is one I expected, which is common to Clevo chassis builds: low battery time. Don't think of this laptop as a "work anywhere" machine. It's better to think of it as a highly portable powerhouse. I now have this extremely powerful PC that I can put in a shoulder bag and take on a plane, and that's plenty for me. It'll run for about 2.5 hours off the mains, so you'll either need a serious powerbank for true unplugged operation on the move or you'll need to be getting to a place where you can plug in. A more minor downside is that it's weighty for a laptop, but if you want a lighter machine then you'll have to sacrifice processing power. I am more than happy with my decision to place the machine's ability as a higher priority than its weight! The smallest nitpick of all is that the screen is nice, but there's a tiny bit of light bleed on some points at the edges when the screen is showing pure blackness. It's not a big deal at all, and you never notice it in normal use.
