It needs to be plugged into a controller that supports eSATA but then it works perfectly, allowing you to plug 5 hard disks into one (e)SATA port. My motherboard's eSATA controller also has an internal port and the board works when connected to that one so I have it mounted internally in my server case.

In theory transfers from one disk on this board to another will run at half speed but in practice it doesn't seem to have been that bad.
