Features

NAS compatibility
WD eliminates the confusion. WD Red is the only hard drive designed for NAS systems that have 1 to 5 drive bays. The drives are designed and extensively tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and demanding system requirements of home and small business NAS.

Enhanced reliability
With a 35% MTBF improvement over standard desktop drives, the WD Red drive is designed and manufactured to be a more reliable and robust solution.

The secret is in the technology–NASware™
Advanced firmware technology built into every WD Red drive, enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in NAS and RAID environments.

Energy efficient
Innovative technology reduces power consumption and lowers the operating temperature, resulting in a more reliable and affordable solution for always on 24x7 NAS environments.

3D Active Balance Plus
Our enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves the overall drive performance and reliability. Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the hard drive life span, and degrade the performance over time.

Premium support
Exclusively for WD Red drive customers, free dedicated 24x7 support line.

Longer warranty coverage
The WD Red drive is backed by a 3-year limited warranty for greater peace of mind.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 28 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by R.A.I.D. in the Server! This is now one-of-a-pair of 3TB HDD's in our Server. This server has to be reliable which is why we chose WD Red HDD. We also use SSD in the Server for its O.S. 13 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by 3TB Red WD30EFRX HHD - Best available NAS focused hard drives After a second hard drive failure in my Synology NAS, I elected to upgrade to larger capacity drives and at the same time fit units specifically designed for use in NAS boxes. Having checked the performance of a number of available NAS specific drives I chose two 3TB WD30EFRX drives. These tripled my NAS capacity and at the same time reduced my NAS boxes internal temperature and also the noise level. To soon to comment on reliability, but I have high hopes this will match the drive's other features. 13 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great drives I use 4 of these 3TB WD Reds in my server and they are great, they run cool and are very quiet. Can't comment on long term reliability as they have only been installed a couple of weeks. 03 October 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Time will tell! Hard drives tend to be reliable these days so it is a little premature to be too effusive about this one! 20 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Dispite a couple of hiccups, great service. I bought 2 of these drives to replace my 2 x 1TB drives I have in my NAS. However although it was no fault of scan I did take 3 attempts on the 2nd drive to get a fully functional one. 1 of the intial drives worked perfect and the 2nd was DOA. No quibbles followed the return process and got a replacement free of charge. Unfortunately the replacement was also faulty. I must stress though no fault of SCAN's as these are sealed units from the manufacturer. Followed the return process once again and no quibbles, I received a 2nd replacement drive. Hurray this one worked and all is rosey. Communication with SCAN was good, service was excellent, and deliveries through DPD are so specific and flexible. 24 July 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Does what it says on the tin I brought this to replace a WD black that suddenly failed just out of waranty. (I was not happy. One day it was working fine, then next it returned loads of read errors) I have fitted it to a linux desktop system and setup LVM volumes on it without difficulty So far it has 'just worked' but then I would be very supriesed and disapointed if it failed any time soon. 11 July 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by bought 2 , 1 failed in 2 hrs and the replacement failed DOA well I have one of the working drives in my Thecus out of 2, not sure for how long , total run time 192 hours so far, but to have 2 fail so quickly for the spare I am wary of buying any more of these. Think I'll try the seagate 3tb next. Scan have been good on support. 09 July 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Bought 7 and had 3 fail within hours I initially bought 5 of these drives for a 4 bay external RAID box (one as a spare). On delivery I used SeaTools, as recommended by Scan tech support, to check the drives. Straight away 2 failed. I returned them, however as I needed to get the RAID box up and running a.s.a.p. I had to buy two replacement drives, costing me more postage. When the new drives arrived I was able to set-up and initialise a RAID 10 disk. After about 2 hours and having copied about 500GB of data I got a constant beep telling me that another hard drive had failed. Thankfully I'd bought a spare, which I put in and the box started to rebuild the RAID disk. So I bought 7 identical WD Red 3TB drives and 3 of them failed. I find that, unsurprisingly, my confidence in these drives has taken a real knock. Was I just really unlucky? 26 June 2014
