Product Overview

The must-have solution for your PC upgrade
The evolution of the SSD has arrived as the Samsung SSD 840 EVO with more speed, more reliability and much easier upgrade tools. Combining the best SSD technology from Samsung, 840 EVO delivers a superior computing experience.

Faster performance for everyday use
The market-leading 840 Series SSD was significantly improved upon in the 840 EVO. Samsung’s new TurboWrite technology delivers dramatically faster sequential write performance. And, with upgrades to NAND, a new controller and firmware, the 840 EVO has superfast responsiveness under everyday workloads.

Features

Proven quality and trusted reliability
Samsung’s unparalleled end-to-end integration allows us to deliver a reliable, high-performance 2nd generation 3-bit MLC SSD. The upgraded firmware and advanced signal processing guarantees the same level of endurance and reliability as our previous generation, while improving performance. The 840EVO’s ultra-low power consumption helps extend laptop battery life longer than before. In addition, Samsung’s “Dynamic Thermal Guard” algorithm in 840 EVO maintains optimal operating temperature for the drive. Samsung 840 EVO is backed by the same 3-year limited warranty as the previous generation.

Easier-than-ever upgrade tools
As SSDs become more main stream, it is important to make the installation process as smooth and simple as possible. Samsung’s Onestop Installation Navigator is a comprehensive guide for software setup, data migration process and hardware installation. The Samsung Data Migration software is simple to use - yet provides a very powerful “Custom Cloning” feature that makes migration work even when source data is greater than the SSD’s capacity. In addition, SATA to USB 3.0 connector makes data migration up to three times faster than USB 2.0 for laptop upgrades*. Together, it is now easier than ever to get setup and running with Samsung SSDs.(*SATA to USB 3.0connector is bundled only with Laptop Upgrade package)

Samsung Magician Software
Magician eliminates the confusion and uncertainties of SSD management, making it simple for users to maximize the performance and lifetime of their Samsung SSD. In addition to its performance optimization features, Magician (from the version 4.2) also provides 840 EVO users the option to enable RAPID mode (Realtime Accelerated Processing of Input-output Data) – an innovative performance enhancement that processes data on a system level by using free DRAM memory as a cache. Once enabled in Magician, RAPID mode provides an overall PC performance boost.

More Powerful Data Security Solutions
The Samsung SSD 840 EVO introduces two important features for data security: hardwarebased AES 256bit Full Disk Encryption (FDE) and PSID. Hardware-based AES Encryption helps safeguard data against attack by encrypting all information on the disk at the hardware level, which means there is no detrimental effect on performance. When you forget your SSD security password, PSID protects your data on the drive by executing a cryptographic erase which returns the drive to its factory status, preventing any unauthorized access to your data.

A Complete, user-friendly solution
With a wide range of capacities from 120GB to the spacious 1TB, the 840 EVO will help you find the perfect SSD for your PC upgrade. And, Samsung’s 1TB drive is a real 1,000GB of useraddressable capacity. The Samsung SSD 840 EVO is available in three packaging configurations: Basic (Drive only), Laptop Upgrade and Desktop Upgrade kit. The Laptop Upgrade kit comes with a SATA to USB 3.0 connector and a mounting spacer. The Desktop Upgrade kit includes a SATA to USB 2.0 connector, a SATA data cable, screws, a 2.5” to 3.5” adapter bracket.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Amazing performance at a reasonable price I got this SSD because I had a bit of budget strain following a CPU + motherboard upgrade. I figured it would perform at the cross section between budget and midrange but this thing has blown me away. With RAPID mode enabled it really flies. My benchmarking results are consistent with the ones found in the Hexus review for this so I suggest you check that one out. It specifically lists the values for RAPID and plain mode and you can see the difference. Cold boot time with Windows 7 on SATA 6Gbps ports: 22 seconds Logon time with antivirus and 12 on-logon apps: <5 seconds Applications pop without delay, game loading goes through without a breeze and lots of MMORPGs just run that much faster. They usually load large texture packs and whatnot so it's a noticable improvement. Granted, 120GB will leave you with a Win7 OS and just a game or 2 that fit on there. But if you configure your libraries in your user profile to go to a traditional media drive then you should have no trouble storing anything. I just move the game(s) I'm on at the moment between my media disk and the SSD and leave it at that. I've used NTFS junction points to keep my Steam games on the media drive and move the commonly used ones to the SSD on demand. It's been great all round and I really didn't expect this value for the money I put in. I'm not sure how long it'll last and whether RAPID mode bring with it some reliability issues but for the price I'll probably get another one and run them in RAID 1 for redundancy anyway. It's a great piece of kit and I highly recommend getting one if you just simply want speed from an upgrade. You can chuck all the CPU horsepower and overclocking, GPU tuning and a new motherboard at your build but the most noticeable difference will come from an SSD. This one fits the bill if you're looking for incredible speeds, good price and simplicity. NOTE: The Samsung Magician software is amazing. It's a simple control centre that will manage the performance profile of this SSD with ease of use at the forefront of the experience. Just another feature that will make you wonder why you were running your operating system off an SSD for the last 4 years. 21 February 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good value, Good size, Good speed Since I'm still on SATA2 I only get about half the speed this drive can offer, but it is still a huge improvement over my existing hard drives. Windows boots in seconds and all applications open quickly. I would recommend this drive. 19 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very quick. Laptop feels like new. My Dell 1720 is six years old. I'd upgraded the CPU to 2.5GHz and fitted 6GB of RAM. Despite this, the laptop was taking ages to boot and was quite sluggish. I installed this 120GB SSD as a primary boot drive paired with a 500GB data drive. The laptop now boots in under a minute and programs open almost instantly. If you have an old laptop/pc that needs a performance boost, I'd highly recommend an SSD. 08 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fast This SSD is faster than my 256GB Crucial M4, both SSDs have the latest firmware. I'm using it in a Micro-ATX build. It's got the fastest load time I've experienced. Bear in mind I'm using the Crucial M4 on an Intel motherboard in the SATAIII 6Gb/s port and I'm using the Samsung 840 EVO in an AMD 3Gb/s port. I think this shows that the speed of the SSD is more important than whether or not you have an Intel controller. 04 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ssd drive Simple to fit and fast. Mounting could be an issue. You need the bits and bobs to convert to fit your drive bay 21 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by My first SSD A lot faster than mechanical hard drives, completely silent due to no moving parts, and not affected by heat like mechanicals are. This is my first SSD so I can't compare its performance with other SSDs, you'll have to do your own research for that. And honestly the difference I don't think is that great. 14 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing product, recommend to everyone. I personally would recommend these drives to everyone. They are the best on the market now in my opinion and they are a great replacement to the now gone, Samsung 830. I'm not sure how people manage without SSDs, machines are so slow without them. 08 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Can't be without SSD now! First SSD so no real reference for comparison to others. But in general, this thing is astoundingly fast. Didn't want to spend quite as much as the going rate at the time for the 840 Pro and, after some research, this sounded like the next best thing. PC is connected to a 37" 1080p TV and from a cold start, switching both on at the same time, PC boots to Win8.1 quicker than the TV can display the picture every time :) Thinking I might get another! 12 December 2013

Evo or Pro

Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade from Samsung 840 SSD to either Evo or Pro. I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit so I want super sonic speed.

What I'm wondering is which SSD is faster Evo or Pro? Written 18TB to my SSD and it's become slower than my 7200rpm Hard Drive.

I heard the Evo uses system RAM which isn't an issue since I have 16Gb's DDR3 1600Mhz.

Answer:
The 840 EVO would be the faster HDD, because of the RAPID mode technology.

Answer:
I believe pro is faster and EVO is the cheaper option.
There is a technology called RAPID which the drive can use on supported chipsets which allows you to use ram for some caching to increase performance, you can set this up in the provided software if you want.
